I'm in the market for a couple used PWCs. I'd like something reliable, top speed greater than 50, two or three-seaters. They will be used by the whole family. (two kids 13 and 11) I am aware that the kids can't drive them.

For kids I would stay away from any turbocharged. They go zero to kill you reall quick. Honda governs theirs at like 74mph. To fast for a teenager.

To add to that, I would stay away from 2 seaters, they are much sportier in my experience.

Have fun and be safe. Be sure to teach your kids the laws...and how not to be a dick.

Try the Sea-Doo spark. Comes in at about $5500 new and is plenty powerful for teenagers or adults without burning through 10 gallons per hour of gas. About the size of the average JetSki from 10-15 years ago vs the 1500 pound, 12 thousand dollar behemoths that you see today LINK

Rented one in Pensacola for a hour. It's got a little pep in the 90hp? version but I wouldn't buy one. It's not very stable with 2 people, it tips easily. And it's not that great in a little chop. Too light imo.

Get a seadoo 3 seater. I had a rxp-x super charged and loved it! If your worried about it being to fast with the kids they come with a training key. It pretty much cuts the power in half and only lets it top out around 30.

I have a Yamaha and a Sea Doo. The yamaha is a tank and the sea doo is a picky bitch that requires lots of attention from the tool box. The sea doo hauls arse when running right but bring a tow rope

I prefer old school 2 stroke with carbs. I can clean/rebuild a carb and keep them running. The 2 strokes with fuel injection and the new 4 stroke engines are too high tech for this shade tree mechanic.

Just buy a boat and let them learn how to ski, 'board, 'skate, or 'surf. PWCs suck, and they're for no talent yew-haws.

If you can find a Sea-Doo RX or RX-DI(direct injected) those were sweet 2 seater skis. Did 60+ with my 300lb arse on it. The RXP's were it's replacement when they started supercharging them.

(lost it in Katrina )

They were made from 2000-2005 I think.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was leaning Seadoo, but I have heard a lot of good reports regarding the reliability of yamaha.

Don't. Do. It.

Unless your kids are fat and uncoordinated they will want something more engaging. Send them to water ski camp in Zachary and buy them a boat they can use.

I had a 1997 seadoo gsx and an spx almost 20 years ago, and they were the best money I ever bwasted. Only kept them 2 years, so I am not that sure of their reliability.

Yamaha is the way to go. They use a simple inline 4 cyl. in the lower tiered models that are bulletproof. We used to have a 2004 and 2006 FX Cruiser SHO, the 2004 actually held up better than the 2006. Both came with a security key to limit speed to 40/45 mph but both topped out at 60/62 normally.

pretty good statement there. I had a 2000 XP and had to work on it literally every weekend. If you buy one, but anything but a sea doo

We had a 1995 sea doo xp. It was a 720cc 2 stroke. fastest thing on the water for at least 5 years. Damn thing would cook. Had to rebuild the motor a few times. We have a Honda aquatrax turbo now. Never changed the battery and never had a wrench on it. It's a 2006.

I had a yaha gp1200r with a riva racing stage 3 kit and an RXP.
both went fast
both needed to be babied or they would be in the shop a lot and cost a lot to fix.
both pulled chicks

I burned up the turbo on the RXP by jumping crewboat waves and waves in the pass by grand isle
the Yamaha gp1200r was way more reliable

This. Yahama 4 strokes. Will run forever and you just don't have to worry about them. No more 2 stroke oil. Just fill with gas and go. Do routine maintenance at season's end.

I bought my first one last year...didnt know shite about them. Went from getting used...to new but mid range...to high end supercharged 3 seater. Kawasaki 310R. I dont know how it will hold up...but it hauls arse lol. Its governed to 70 i believe. It will do 69 with me and my wife on it and I weight over 300. Has a 20 gallon tank, but u need it all to travel any good distance. Gas freaking guzzler.

We had a sup'd up Seadoo HX in the late 90's. That thing would fly, but you couldn't cough without turning it over.
