She prompted me to look for a pistol. She owns a Saturday night special. Jennings J22 POS. I cleaned it at got that turd polished. She cannot rack the slide on it (this is a big hurdle for her and semi auto guys). Many on the previous thread suggested Glock. I am not a Glock hater but KNOW my mom will never be able to rack a round to load it. And if she ever got a slide bite she would put it away forever. Might try to pistol whip an assailant with it, but never fore it.

Enter the Smith and Wesson 642 or 637. The one with the exposed hammer. I may have found MY new gun as I love the little thing. But can someone pro and con me on an exposed or enclosed hammer? Exposed LOOKS cooler to me. But not a good reason to buy a gun for someone else.

Ib4.

I want her to take a basic handgun training/safety class.

I want to take her to fire one before buying.

Thanks, and again to any semi auto guys out there, I am not shitting on these guns. I own a CZ 75 myself and love it. It is just something that won't happen. Meaning my mom getting proficient with tear down and or loading a semi auto pistol. I can wish in one hand and shite in the other kind of situation.

She could not rack a J22, and I REM oiled the frick out of that gun.

Why have a 15 ounce S&W Airweight as a nighstand revolver?
Just get an all steel revolver with a 4" barrel.
I'd recommend the 36+ ounce S&W 66 or 686.
With the added weight, she'll enjoy practicing with it much more. It's much less of a hand beater.

The enclosed hammer is a pro if you're going to conceal carry. A revolver with a hammer has the potential to hang up on clothing, etc. when trying to pull it out.

Yeah my dad bought my mom a bersa 380 thinking it would be a good size and not much recoil.

She isnt even close to racking the slide yet. But she practices at least.

My 686 with 38's feels almost like a 22LR. Even with 357 Mag it's not bad at all. Not much worse than the Glock 23.

Solid advice - IF S&W didn't still put the stupid lock on their revolvers. I'm agin it, and everyone ought to be agin it.

SO, my recommendation would be a Ruger GP100.

Used market you ought to be able to make it happen.

New GP100 should be under $700 - maybe $650 or less if you shop around. 66 might be in that range, and 686 a little more. I'm still anti-Smith revolver because of the "Clinton" lock.

+1 to the suggestions for a full sized revolver. If she doesn't plan on carrying it there is no reason for the tiny, recoil-inducing, hand-destroying airweight revolver. And also +1 to the Ruger GP100. You'll probably find much better pricing on it versus the Smith.

And for those who think women can't rack a slide, you're wrong. Teach them the proper method so they can utilize large upper body muscle groups rather than isolating the forearm muscles. I'm not saying you have to give her a semi-auto but to say most women can't rack the slide on one is just plain wrong. Here's an illustration:

Get the 686P/686+. Comes with a 7 shot cylinder.

Or get the S&W TRR8. Has an 8 shot cylinder.

You're welcome!

Or double the budget and get a 627 with 8-shots.

I had a 110 pound, 70-year old woman with weak hands racking the slide on a SP2022 with ease. It is easier to rack a full-size slide and technique is everything at that point.

I would stay away from snub noses completely and away from .357 too.

Have you looked at the model 625 in 45 acp with 4" barrel? $800 on gunbroker.

Yes, that S&W revolver would run $650-700
Look for a S&W Model 10 for a cheaper price around $550.

Also, I found a Ruger SP101 for $550 w free shipping if you can swing an extra $50 (plus FFL transfer fees)
https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/44774/5719/ruger-sp101-357mag-3-inch-barrel-stainless

You can shoot .38's out of the .357 with no problem.
The added weight with the .357 gun will also help.

Not sure the logic here.

That's a great gun, N-frame, etc. But, for the intended purpose, I almost think he should be going .357 revolver with .38 +P carried. JMHO as always.

If you're requiring a beginner to use moon clips I think that's an ill-advised suggestion.

I haven't seen a person that can't handle 357 magnum out of a 4" steel revolver. I think it's his best option if he insists on a revolver.

That's what I was saying, Bap - great gun:

Jerry Miculek's makeshift machinegun

- but not for the intended purpose.

And, .38 special +P (or even defense oriented .38 standard pressure) is an option if full power .357 is too hot. But, I agree, very manageable to fire .357B (still hard to beat it's demonstrated performance) or equivalent magnum pressure 125 grain bullet out of a steel frame, 4" revolver. Smith or Ruger, preferably, but there are other options. I think Smiths have better triggers. I think Rugers are more durable.

Ruger GP100 is a good option to the 686. Not under $500 option but you should be able to find a used one in the $500-600 range all day.
