I'm about to purchase my first truck for personal use. House, camp, fishing, pulling boat. I'm looking at f150s. Which bed length should I get? The 5.5 bed looks best but it sure seems short especially with a tool box. Should I just go with 6.5 bed. Opinions?

Are you getting a regular cab, extended cab or 4 door? If you're getting the regular cab go with the long bed...if you're getting the extended cab or 4 door I'd go with the regular or shorter bed. You don't want your truck the length of a semi and yes the 1 foot will make a difference in parking, etc.

I have a 6.75. Couldn't fit my big arse toolbox otherwise. It would've hit the fender wells on a short bed. I also couldn't have put a four wheeler in there if I had a short bed and toolbox

If you're putting a tool box in a short bed, you need to purchase a trailer at the same time.

Extended cab with 6.5 is the sweet spot for me. Can fit people in back seat and a Honda rancher with the tailgate up

I have a Silverado ext cab short bed, step side, with a tool box. My 4 wheeler fits but have to leave the tailgate down. Bought a LA Guard Dog to hold the bike down, can also hook a trailer to it. I wouldn't change my bed if I had to do it over again. Go with what you think looks the best/ serves your needs best.

A buddy of mine has a super crew FX4 with the 6.5'. I thought it looked goofy at first but the extra bed space comes in handy, and could see myself getting the 6.5 if I ever purchased a super crew.

On my F150 i have the SuperCrew cab with the 5.5' bed. I absolutely love it and wouldn't trade it. I like the amount of storage i have in the back seat when i fold the seats up. Great for hauling things in foul weather.

Is the wheelbase the same? Is it much more difficult parking with the longer bed?

5.5 with a tool box will be way too small, down side is 6.5 with crew cab is an extended wheelbase.

5.5 is really too short on many occasions that I need it, but a tailgate extender helps

I almost made this same thread earlier today.

5.5' just seems so short when I'm throwing 12' kayaks in the back but the People at the dealership looked at me like I was crazy when I brought up wanting a 4 door with a 6.5' bed.
I want to say that it changes the wheelbase when you step up to that size so it may have some significant parking and on-the-lot availability penalties compared to regular 5.5 box.

Don't get a F150. Buy a Chevy/GMC. Ecoboost is a fraud

Never really thought about using backseat for storage. Hardly ever do I have more than 1 passenger so crew cab never really crossed my mind. Interesting.

I have mine folded down 95% of the time to throw stuff that needs to stay dry in and the dog posts up back there

Yep, did some research and 6.5' bed on a super crew cab stretches the wheelbase and really turns it into a different truck apparently.

I guess my 4 door chevy currently has around a 6' bed? just measured it with my arm span and I'm 6' tall.

We are talking about 1 foot difference. If you have trouble parking that, you have no business driving a truck. I drove a f250 crew cab with the 8' bed (23' long) for about a year and had no problem parking or turning. You get use to it quick. Just back into spots at first and you will get use to it.

The longer wheelbase not only give you an actual REAL bed, but make the ride smoother too, especially when pulling a trailer. I recently traded in my half ton for a 2500hd and everyone looked at me funny when I asked if they had any long beds on the lot. None! I went with the short bed (6.5') and still love it but sometimes wished I had held out for the long bed.
