I was told that if you should leave your onboard charger plugged in always when you are not on the water to prolong battery life. Is this true?

I had 3 exides in my xpress that lasted 3 and half years and I didn't leave them plugged in like I should have. I replaced them with everstart wally world and they worked great.

on my new boat I have 4 batteries from 2012 and they are just fine. I have an onboard I leave plugged in and I also have a perko switch that kills all the power to the boat from all 4 batteries.

if I had to replace them and I will eventually ill go with 4 evertstarts from wally world. they will take back anything. and they aren't bad priced batteries. exides aren't bad either from academy.

3 interstate batts on my fiberglass bass boat (2 deep cycle and 1 cranking). So far so good (going on 3 years).

1 optima blue top in the flat-bottom aluminum boat. So far so good (going on 2 years).

Yes. As a lead acid battery live longest if it remains charged. As the battery charge level lowers the cells begin to sulfate. Prolonged time at low charge levels and sulfation gets to a level that the battery will no longer charge. Also charging them slowly and keeping the heat down as they charge will also help with the life of the cells. Buy a float charger and keep them plugged in when you aren't using them for maximum life.

those are sweet...
last 10x more cycles...
quarter of the weight...
can get one battery in 12, 24 or 36 volts for marine usage...

they do cost 10x what you would pay for a good deep cycle battery...

basically if you can afford the cost up front they are worth it and pay for themselves...

All depends on your budget man. If you've got the funds, go with Odyssey. Most of the others are more or less the same.

If price is deciding factor. It hard to beat Advance Auto Parts buy online with coupon code and pick up in store. Bring in your core and they credit your core charge back to the credit card you used for purchase.

$40 off $100 code TRT41
$30 off $75 code TRT37

I do this with amps in my boat. I had a few marine jbls that went out so I just started buying Walmart amps with the plan to return when broken. Dam thing lasted longer than the rest though...

Any suggestion for a good float (trickle) charger? My last one didn't switch to float mode and burned the batteries up.

Ran interstates for years with no problems, go to the warehouse, see if they have any blemished, or B line batteries, about $40 IIRC.
I just switched to Deca's this year, buddy sold his boat and gave them to me, perfect timing as I needed to replace 2 of the 3, and the other was getting on up in age.
