I am looking to get a watch for running and cycling. I don't care much about wearing it while swimming at this point.

The Garmin 910XT triathlon edition looks great, but I am wondering if there is one that is equivalent but without the water needs. Thus making it less expensive.

TIA

I think it's either all 3 functions or just a regular gps ... I have a 210 and would ride with it but I was JUST riding not a du or tri.

Garmin sells refurbished things ... maybe check out the 310 as it's much older but does bike/run/swim and is likely a bunch less $$.

garmin 310 is basically a 910 minus swim features. The 910 is a little better all around though, and it's not super expensive.

LINK

310 xt is discontinued but you can still find them. Amazon, Ebay. Read about it at the above link; it does swim as well. Anything Garmin is great. And they have awesome customer support (needed it for Garmin/computer issues).

I've got the 910xt. Never had the 310, so I can't compare. I love it. I lucked up and found a guy selling one and an Edge 500 for the bike for $240 total. Both in great condition. Check out Slowtwich . com 's classified board.

My Edge 500 was dead a couple days ago so I used the 910 for my ride. I have to admit, it sucked to wear it on my wrist. If you want something for the bike, I'd get a watch with a quick connect so you can mount it on your bars. That way when you are riding, you can still see the watch, but can see it without having to move your hands (which sucks on the aero bars).

And I don't know if you swim, but I love it for swimming. First, the pace clock isn't always working at the crappy gym's I swim at. But more importantly, the watch will just keep track of your entire pool workout and saves the info so you can see your progress. When you start swimming 2500-3000 yds in a 25 yd pool, I lose track easily. But the watch keeps me honest.

I use the forerunner 15. It's primarily a GPS running watch, but I can measure distance of rides too.

I do the bare minimum to stay in good enough shape for sprints, but if I was doing it for high performance and needed to monitor workouts closely, the 310 or 910 look great.

I started doing tri's, so yes I do.

Or hard to see.

Me too!

Allright the 910xt looks like the thing to get.

Thanks to all for your input and help.

Just spend $450 and get the 920xt . That way you can monitor your heart rate under water and get texts at the same time. It's totally necessary.

But in all seriousness, I think I've recently seen the 910 being sold new for as low as $180.

I'm new to tri's this year, but had been riding for a little while. That watch does wayyyy more than I really need it to. It would easily suffice for the bike, but I came across a good deal and don't use it for that much (unless doing a brick). Kind of motivates me to keep do workouts as well. Nice to see my calendar full on Garmin Connect.

Absolutely!

I love to get the 920, but the 910 will be fine for me.

Does that system actually plan your workouts for you?

You can set up workouts. I have a few interval workouts for the bike set up which is nice so that it will start beeping at me if I slow down too much. I think there are some training plans you can also get into that have workouts already set up, but I hadn't gotten that deep. Only had the watch for about a month and a half to be honest. But it stores your workout on the calendar and shows your weekly totals and such. You can break down all of your laps (set up to auto lap every mile on the run, 5 miles on the bike, and when I hit lap on the swim). So I can see speed over that lap, heart rate, cadence, etc. Captures a lot of info and I only have a HRM, cadence sensor, and speed sensor. If you get a power meter or foot pod for running, there's even more info.

I mean you can easily get by without it, but it is definitely nice to see everything.

Used 910 for sale

I was browsing the classifieds on this site and saw this posted and thought of this thread. Seems to be a good community of people and where I got mine.
