People just feel like they're wasting their time and money on a lease if they aren't shooting enough. You can't be short term oriented if you want to be successful, obviously.

Keep in mind that their definition of successful may be different than yours.

Truth. I'm fine with one or 2 deer a year, especially if I'm still seeing deer most hunts. A few of the guys I hunted with were there to put as much meat as possible in the freezer. Like if they could and knew they wouldn't get caught they'd shoot over their 8 a year and not think twice about it. Dudes piling up does during the rut and being proud of it.

The point is, one guy on our lease considered it a cull and dropped him just because he was bored and wanted meat. I on the other hand was going to hunt my stand (where he shot the buck) the next morning and would have considered it a trophy.

Management is difficult on the other end too as some guys consider a 16" wide 6 pt without brows to be crap and shot them as a cull but want everyone else to hold off for anything but a 150 plus trophy.

folks if that was shot here on public or private lease land in Florida no one would say a word because thats considered good size. To get anything sizable,"trophy", you have to go to the pay to hunt "clubs" and drop several hundred to a thousand and shoot something with an unpronouncable name that has never eaten anything that wasn't slung from a feeder.

Until the State goes to an 8 point or better rule, which it wont, you will always have adults dumbasses shooting young bucks. I dont get anybody who shoots a buck they are not gonna put on the wall for "meat", why not just shoot a doe and let the baby bucks walk?

I'm a fan of shooting a buck you're proud of but working towards shooting mature deer. I love the lease but as soon as I can afford a place of my own (dad's lease) I'm finding another place

Man, I'm going through the exact same thing. Frustrating as hell. I hunt a couple places that have so much potential. We have beautiful creek bottoms, tons of hardwoods, enough room for summer and winter food plots, plenty of deer, not a ton of pressure, and so on. But, the people I hunt with will whack a 2.5 year old 12 inch 8 point like no other and be damn proud of it.

I want it to be fun, but it just kills me for me to be able to see what we could do, and they just shite all over it. We could legitimately turn one of these places into one of the finest places around our area with some good management, like growing 140, 150, 160 class, occasionally better, like it's going out of style, but some people just think it's more about quantity than quality.

Here's an example. I remember a couple years ago one guy killed a 2.5 year old 10 point like 12 inches wide, 7 inch tines or so, solid mass. Beautiful little rack for our area. I commented something like "man if this deer could have made it two more years, he could have been 160 easy, maybe better." His response was "I may be dead in two years." What the hell can I say back to that?
