The purpose and value of a pistol-caliber carbine

Compared to an M4. I'm having a hard time seeing it. I haven't been following 9mm ammo prices but I don't think it's any cheaper than .223. 30 round pistol mags aren't near as reliable as AR mags. A pcc isn't any lighter or shorter. Recoil might be less, if you're a woman, but any woman >90# should do just fine with an M4.
Am I missing something?

We have some Colt 9mm SMGs that I can't stand.

So your handgun and rifle can shoot the same ammo

I've seen people use a pistol carbine with a folding stock (Keltec) as a truck gun. I personally have no desire to own one. Rifle round > pistol round every day of the week.

I like the look of the Beretta CX4 Storm but never got one for the reasons you cite.
I already have a WW2 M1 Carbine that I think already fills this role.

no, it's near and dear to my heart.
It's an authentic Inland paratrooper w/folding stock.

Set the bar for pistol-caliber carbines and hasn't been met IMO.

They are sweet to shoot and you feel like you are one with the weapon.
Light, quick handling, decent power and rate of fire.
She's an old girl, but she is still charming.

-Downrange safety. Pistol carbine round will begin heading into dirt at 120 yards, not keep going flat for 200-300 yards like a rifle round...greatly reduced risk of harming others.
-Greatly improved ballistics over a pistol, e.g. 9mm fired out of a 16-in barrel performs like a .357 mag pistol.
-Much more accurate than a pistol
-Same ammo.

I have my grandpas. I don't shoot it anymore due to age and don't want anything bad to happen to a family heirloom, but when I was shooting it was almost like I would just will the rounds to hit where ever I wanted with no effort. Probably the easiest, non .22 shooting gun I've handled.

Good point. If anyone's interested in the actaul #'s, here they are: LINK
I'd also add that some shooters, especially the less experienced, can handle and shoot a carbine better and more accurately than they can a handgun.

I'm not so sure about that. For example, different models of the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 use either S&W M59, Glock or Beretta M92 mags; there are all mags w/ a good track record for reliability.

I know it's not technically a carbine, but it is the same for this argument.
There is a reason why guns like the MP5 are so popular worldwide. You don't need a full size rifle round in urban environments so shorter SMGs fit the bill. You get ease of use, cheaper ammo, less recoil and still get a significant bump in performance.

Yep.
Pistol caliber SMGs make tons of sense to me. Shooting softies from short range would be alot easier with a small, low recoil, low noise weapon.

My neighbor broke out a 9mm Marlin carbine yesterday that he's had since he was a kid. Really cool little rifle and I'd never seen one like it.
I'm gonna check gunbroker and see what they're selling for.

I've shot that gun in .45 and it was a lot of fun.

Add ability to fire in an indoor range to the list

Yes, the sheer pleasure of shooting a lever gun in .357
Plinking with .38s is a hoot - and used to be cheap.
Interchangeable ammo with your wheel gun is a plus. And with about a 36" o/a length, it's the ultimate truck gun.
But really, it's just fun.
