That Didn't Take Long - Fisherman Catches Tagged Redfish, Wins Truck

When Raymond Champagne's cork plunged Tuesday morning near a sunken barge off the Fourchon beach, he set the hook and reeled in a brand-new Chevy Silverado.
The truck was in the form of a tagged redfish that had been released by STAR tournament officials. Ironically, Champagne almost did the same thing.
"I thought it was just a little rat red," he said. "I was going to let it go. I didn't see the tag until I got it in the boat.
"My daughter had entered us (in the STAR) the night before. I was like, 'Hey, maybe we won something.'"

I wonder if winning prizes super early like this will make a difference in the number of people participating? If the top prizes get scooped up in a couple weeks, what motivation do people have to enter?

I have no reason to register b/c it seems like everything is released farther south than I fish

I don't think they release tagged reds in my area

damn, that will definitely hurt registration numbers. still 9 nautic stars though

There was another one caught Sunday near Grand Isle by a guy who was unregistered.

Seems like every year someone catches one the 1st or 2nd weekend of the year in either Grand Isle or Fourchon.

did you think before you typed all of this?

There are separate regions for different prize categories. Only one truck but tons of other stuff.

Ole Boy caught that redfish a couple days before, but it back in a drum, signed up online, came back and PROFIT!

I saw that too, would be funny if it holds up. I know there was a 28" trout caught/weighed out West too. Not sure if that one will go in the kayak division or overall trout division. I keep checking for the updated leaderboard to see what it actually weighed and what division they put it under.

Why couldn't it have bitten my hook

No joke, we fished that exact same island a couple weeks ago, I bet you'll be able to walk boat to boat on that island this weekend. Seems they don't usually go far, the first one that was caught last year was caught by someone unregistered, then caught the next weekend a couple sets of jetties down from where it was first caught.
