I did a search for .38 ammo but mostly saw .380 talk. If there is a known thread for this please link.

My question is what is recommended for personal protection in .38+p rated frame?

I bought a LCR this week and as you know is rated for .38+p. I bought a box of PMC bronze FMJ 132gr standard .38 spl ammo(got bent over at $40 for a box of 50 ) but i just want to start out slow and get to know the gun then graduate to a better round for cc. This will be a pocket cc choice for me when I opt out of the G23.

TIA

.38 has killed a $hitload of people. You have a good round. With a small frame wheel gun, all you have to do is get proficient from 7 yards and in.

Deciding between the LCR and ultra light S&W myself.

I would say whatever bonded hollowpoint in +P you could find at this point.

Just like everything else, good self defense ammo is hard to come by these days.

Here are some brands that are generally regarded as good personal defense rounds:

Buffalo Bore
Winchester PDX1
Federal Hydrashok
Remington Golden Saber
Cor-Bon
Speer Gold Dot
PMC Starfire
Winchester Ranger SXT

Well hopefully I never have to use it except at the range.

Anyone shoot the LCR proficiently with a particular HP round?

Proficient with this gun would be point shooting and hitting a small paper plate IMHO.

This is good stuff right there. I carried it for years as my Duty ammo before we went to Glocks.

The FMJ round opens up like a set of razor blades attached to a led weight. It will absolutely shred whatever it hits. It is in my opinion one of the most deadly rounds you can use. Years ago, the FBI did a study on ammo using pigs. They literally used various rounds to see what did the best job of killing them with head shots. .38 +P FMJ and believe it or not, .22 were the best two performing rounds. They acted very differently. The .38 just destroyed the brain and the .22 bounced all over the place. Both worked well according to the study.

I am unaware of any link to prove this but, I read it years ago in my LEO training.

I still carry my air weight .38 off duty as my conceal gun.

I don't have experience with a snubby. Gotta be very particular with 'em. ScubaOz on YouTube tested several rounds out of a snubby and some of the results are shocking (as in how poorly some performed).

One seemed to do best (Gold Dot). LINK

Seems to be a decent amount of .38 to be found...

Here are a few more thoughts on a conceal carry gun. I've always looked at them as a tool to buy me time to GTFO of a bad situation. I really don't care if it drops the bad guy dead with one shot. I want it to stop whatever the treat is so I can escape the situation.

Marksmanship probably plays as much a role as does the weapon/ammo. Hit center mass and you will probably have a better chance of dropping them dead. Hit their arm and you are still fighting for your life.

It is important to practice with whatever you carry so you actually use it if needed.

It is also important to realize that you likely miss whatever you are shooting at, especially with a snubby.

Those things are hard to shoot, no sight radius, typically tiny sights, and kick like a mule with decent ammo.

When adrenaline kicks in you will have little control of what you're doing unless you've come back from the war a cool customer under fire.

As stated earlier, they are best for letting you open range while shooting.

I just got an LCP with the factory installed crimson trace a few weeks ago and I love it. I already have some .38s though, not Ruger, and I love them but I wanted something that fit even better in my jeans pocket. Good choice!

1. This, and some of the other comments, are true.

2. Your marksmanship skills, your gunhandling skills, your tactics and your mindset (probably in reverse order) will be far more important than the gun you pick or the ammo you pick.

3. Speer makes a 135 grain +p load specifically for short-barreled revolvers. If you can find it, it's the "gold standard" (no pun intended) for J-frame and similar size revolvers. (GHP23921)

I've read plenty of good things about Speer short barrel ammo. They make a similar .357mag load. I've never heard/read anything bad about the gold dot bullet. I love how Speer makes a few different variations of the bullet tailored to different velocities.

To the OP, any hp that you can shoot well will do. My vote goes to Speer gold dot. I've heard they do very well at .38 snub velocities.

Bass Pro had plenty of target 38 special. 100 rounds winchester box was a bit pricey at $40 but if you need it they have them in stock.
