let me preface this post by saying I am young and inexperienced in the realm of surf fishing.

Im 18 and consider myself to be a good fisherman from a boat, but have never had the opportunity to fish from the surf. I have always wanted to try it, though. I have a camp in leeville and am confident that we can find some reds in the surrounding marsh, however, I don't feel confident making the haul out to E Timbalier F brice ect as is neded to catch trout this time of year. I know the OB has discussed this numerous times, but I was wondering if one of you more seasoned surf anglers would mind sharing a few locations and tactics in GI for me to cut my teeth on the surf trout action. By the way, we will be there from Wednesday-Saturday. thanks for the help guys.

Walk out to rocks in Grand Isle. Fish. Catch. Watch out for sharks.

You don't need to walk out to the rocks. Get to the beach before sunlight and cast in ankle to knee deep water. Use top water early then switch to live bait.

In GI it depends on what set of rocks. I prefer the deeper ones that you shouldn't try and walk around. I walk out to the middle of the rocks and fish the gullies between the bars, the back of the rocks, and the corners. Never had issue with sharks but the Dolphins can get a little crazy but it's a good thing IMO. I've use live shrimp under a cork, on the bottom, vudu shrimp, and matrix shads.Top water at day break. I catch fish on all of those if the water is clean. SE wind I wouldn't even bother fishing GI beach. Get yourself a floating basket to put your catch in, the Dolphins won't mess with that. I try to throw my throw backs over the rocks to keep the dolphin away.

You ever see a dude fishing out a golf cart with this set up holla

The rock piles start as soon as you get to Sureway (which is about half way down the island). Pick a rock pile and begin casting as soon as you get to the water. Sometimes you can find the trout and not even have to step in the water. I usually try the middle of the pile and then try either end. Try to find a rock pile no one else is fishing, just a common courtesy. Early i have success with topwater and live croakers, later you may want to switch to live shrimp. I prefer to free-line my live bait. Live shrimp or a Vudu shrimp under a cork works pretty good as well. I'd suggest a floating fish basket with a net tied to it. Also you may want to bring a few extra rigs in case you break off. This is my setup.
