I throw crabs pretty much year round for slot fish. #2 all the way down to #6. Kwans and Merkin crabs mostly. Bead chain eyes for the most part. Lead eyes when I need to get down fast. I drop down to a Gotcha variant tied sparse with rubber legs when the fish a being spooky. I would rather throw a lighter fly than a longer leader but it's just personal preference.

If I'm fishing bulls in the fall I'll tie unweighted #2 and 1/0 bait fish patterns for crawlers and keep a couple lead eye baitfish patterns for tailing or mudding fish. Sometimes I'll tied up a few deer hair sliders if I'm feeling bored.

I take a very minimalist approach to redfish. After doing it for long enough a big part of me believes presentation trumps pattern 95% of the time. I grab a fly based on water depth and clarity without too much thought of the pattern itself as long as it's the right color and weight. I just happen to like crabz.

Back in 09 I used to work at Uptown Angler in the Nola cbd. They sell these really small spoons made by a local retired Marine colonel. They can hardly keep them on the counter because they are so highly recommended and catch the redfish with much success. You could call/go there and grab some and give them a shot.

Micro gold spoons. About the size of a quarter.

Agreed. I throw a 1/0 lead eye crab pretty much all the time at slots. I throw bead chain if I'm fishing over snot grass.

That's about the extent of my redfish fly care. If a redfish is hungry, it's going to eat something that looks like a crab.

Typical redfish flies
I guess technically this is a biatfish but my buddy ties the body with a heavy collar so when it's bumped along the bottom it get's big and crabby

Typical crab. This is what one looks like after getting smashed all day by redfish.

The body is a palmered rabbit zonker, that much I know. The tail is just some kind of synthetic. He ties the same style body with saddle hackle somehow but I've never bothered to try and figure out how he does it. It's a good little fly.
