Make/model/caliber?

I have a M&P Shield 9mm that I carry, and a few others just for the range, but have been wanting to get a revolver to keep in my bedside table.

I was looking at the Taurus M380, but admittedly don't know much about Taurus. Any suggestions? .380 seems to be a popular revolver choice. Also, interested to hear preferences on hammer/hammerless. TIA

FWIW: Would prefer not to spend over 1k if at all possible.

38**. 380 is a semiauto cartridge

If carrying, hammerless
If not, DA/SA

Since it's sitting in a nightstand, get a nice 4" DA/SA

686 is a great choice. if you don't mind the used route look on gunbroker for used smith and wesson model 10s

S&W Mdl. 686 would be a good choice. Also if you could find a S&W Mdl. 66 in good shape on the pre-owned market that would be an excellent choice as well.

Ruger is bombproof and overbuilt (extremely robust design). Smith & Wesson has a more smooth trigger and action. Depends what you like. Hold and dry fire both to see what you like.

A blued, all steel S&W with a hammer in .357 and 3" barrel will be a family heirloom for generations.

Hard to pass on anything I like, and can get in SS.

Aesthetically, I prefer my blued revolvers over stainless

I inherited a 90 year old blued S&W revolver that was daily-carried by a sheriff's officer with minimal care that is in 90+% condition and fires like new.

That's great. Maybe it's just me but most " hand-me-down" stories I hear begin with, "How can Irestore it."

If anybody is in the market for a new revolver, I strongly recommend you look at the S&W Masterpiece collection. They come in all calibers and are old-school blued finished that generally cost about a $150 premium over their modern stainless replacements.

I know it's a little over $1000, but I like keeping a 460XVR in my nightstand.

On the serious side, I have a 686 and an older model 66 both in .357.

I personally like the model 66 better. Very smooth and only had a 2" barrel.
