My son and I fish out of a 14/42 with a 30 Johnson. We're fishing Chef Pass, The Rigolets, The Tressels, and Hopedale. Price range within $125 - $299.
Thanks
Thanks

The HDI is great for the price. If you can swing $350ish, I recommend getting the 5, there is a world of difference in a 4" and 5" screen.

That is true, the 5 screen is much larger.

Just to clarify, the Lowrance Elite-4 and Elite-5 have GPS. If there is an "x", it does not have GPS/chartplotter, just fish finder and is cheaper... Elite-4x or Elite-5x. One of major benefits of Lowrance over other brands is their GPS and ability to use satellite mapping. Maps can be made for free and if you butter up the right OBer, they will give you maps for free. IMO, its not cost effective to go WITHOUT GPS. In South Louisiana, you need GPS as well as satellite imagery. "Chirp" is the lastest versions but you can still find HDI only on shelves and online (HDI a year or two older and less expensive)
For kayak go Elite 4 HDI minimum. For boat, go Elite 5 HDI minimum.

I kinda think the difference between the 4 and 5 is negligible. The 5, as a unit is much bigger, because of the layout. Even with the 5, you're going to struggle with split screen mode. I don't think the split screen is really practical until you get to the 7.
Just using one screen, I wouldn't care if I had a 4 or 5.

Dave, I use the 4 and my neighbor the 5. The 5 is faster with memory, pulling up info, navigating menus, etc. The 5 also has much better protection for SD card slot... which is the only non waterproof opening on the units.
The only advantage of the 4 package over 5 is the 5's no longer come with a hard cover and must be purchased separately. The 4's come with hard cover in box.

Raymarine Dragonfly 4 Pro - $250 and IMO a better unit than the Lowrance Elite 4 HDI. Better transducer (Dragonfly uses broad spectrum CHIRP vs traditional 2D and downimaging for the Lowrance) and a better screen. The Pro model of the dragonfly also comes with GPS and a mapping chip. It gets my vote.
I just did a ton of research and installed one on my kayak. If you're gonna go with either unit, buy from AnchorExpress.com. They have the best prices that I could find. Be VERY careful when purchasing the Lowrance Elite 4 HDI if you go that route. Make sure the model you are buying has both 2D sonar and down-scan. The head units look the same but sometimes they package different transducers with it and still call it the Elite 4 HDI even though it doesn't have down-imaging. The models you want are 000-11288-001 or 000-11216-001.
Raymarine Dragonfly 4 PRO - $245
Lowrance Elite 4 HDI - $195

Great unit, I would also submit the mark series, sonar, and gps, no down, but a good unit for the money.

They actually make one with down-scan too and its $150 at WestMarine.com
Lowrance Mark 4 HDI - $150
I was steered away from b&w units by the OB fwiw. That's pretty much the only reason I ended up with the Dragonfly 4 PRO instead of the Mark 4 HDI. It's a good little unit from all accounts.

I stand corrected, I have the 4 on the bow of my boat, B&W, it serves its purpose, but if you do a lot of standing I would suggest a larger unit, might be hard to stay in the OP price range over a 5" though.

I tried to call Navico, but they aren't open yet. I can't imagine the 5 actually being any faster than the 4. I would be very surprised if they don't have the exact same internals. On the website, they are even grouped together, claiming that they "have many of the great features from the 7 & 9)...or something like that. That leads me to believe the 4 & 5 are the same and maybe the 7 & 9 are the same.
Can't comment on the difference in openings, but I don't feel the SD slot on the 4 to be inadequate. Pretty hard for water to get in there.
I would also check out Cocos suggestion with the RayMarine. He did a pretty good review of it a couple weeks ago. I think the CHIRP may only be marginally better, if at all than the standard downscan; I remember him saying you can split the screens between the display and your phone. That sounds like it could be useful for some.
Good news is that there are a lot of nice choices in your price range with features that would not have been available just a few years ago.
