Suggestions for a firearm for home protection on a limited budget?

Hello OB -
I don't know much about firearms and I would like to be educated. I have been hunting once and held a rifle, but never shot it. I went to a shooting range a few years ago and fired off a few different weapons with the guidance of a friend.
But I don't know what to purchase. I have about $200 to spend on this, and my budget is tight for the next few years.
I also need to learn proper usage and safety. I assume Youtube videos would not cut it here.
I have a 2 year old in the house and a wife. I'd love to train my wife how to use one as well.
I've also always been confused about having a firearm in the house that is ready to be used in the event of a home invasion while at the same time being tucked away so that it cannot be found and used by children.
Thanks!

You wanting a long gun or a pistol? You can probably find a cheap pump shotgun or revolver new for a little more than $200. You're best bet may be to find something used

No clue.
Someone kicks my door in at 12am. What do I shoot him/her with?

Shotgun and not a Joe Biden type. He's an idiot.

A 12 gauge pump is sub $300 and probably the best for home defense. Remington 870 or Mossberg 500

If shite hit the fan I'd probably reach for the shotgun loaded with buckshot first because I feel much more comfortable shooting it and you'll have more projectiles spread out over a larger area giving me a better chance of hitting my target. Some may prefer pistols due to their maneuverability and ease of concealment

Pump shotgun your wife should be able to handle a 12ga but you would be fine with a 20ga.

Sounds like shotgun is the recommended route.
But what about home safety? How do you keep a usable shotgun under the bed and not have your two year old find it and kill himself?

Put it between the mattress and the box spring. Surely ur 2 year old isnt strong enough to move the mattress.

If you don't know much about firearms and aren't willing to put in the time to train on a regular basis, there is really only one answer, a shotgun, 12 or 20 gauge. See about shooting them before you buy. You'll probably go with the 20, especially if your wife wants to consider handling it and she has no firearm experience.

Mossberg Maverick 88 pump. Can catch at Academy or others for around $180 on sale

Either a 12 gauge pump or a decent used revolver.

And that will be tight.

I will go against the grain here. An AR15 is one of the best home defense options. More capacity, less recoil, and no need to worry about over-pebatration with good home defense ammo.

Go the 12 gauge route if that's your budget. Both Remington and mossberg like mentioned above are excellent choices and should be available used within your budget

Yes but that's not close to his budget. If you know where to get one on the OP's budget range let me know. I'll buy 20 of them right now.

Eh, you can get an M&P sport for close to $550 these days. I don't know his budget though.
