Stocking a Retention Pond behind the Neighborhood....good idea or bad?

We've got two good sized retention ponds behind a new development coming up. One is about 40 yards wide by 100 yards long and roughly 20 feet deep with at least a dozen large cypress stumps throughout. The other one is the same width and depth but twice as long. They're connected by a 48" culvert.
I've been thinking about bringing home some fish to drop in there for the kids to go have fun with....bass and perch mainly. Just wondering if they'll survive in there on their own or is there anything I can (or need to) do to help in their survival.

A lot will depend if it will hold water year round and how deep. Also, how long ago were they built? If not long ago, give it a year. Overall, I would put fish in it. What would you have to loose?

A good start would be securing permission from the land owner to do so, after this bass should be fine, perch probably not so much. Try a few bream and cats, they would do well.

my 'hood has several retention ponds and they are all stocked. I don't see a problem if it's just bass and bream. some species will find there way in there anyway when there's a high water event.

Unless the builder takes strong runoff measures, the pond will continue to be turbid until the entire site is vegetated or is fully constructed. I'd be sneaky and put woody structures, etc in it.

Put some stripers in it for sure since it's so deep.

Funny you're asking this...
We're moving to a house that backs up to a pond. I was seriously considering some amberjack or cobia. I was told the pond is pretty deep

The ponds have been in place for a solid year now. And yeah....EASILY 20ft deep. It used to be cane field...my property backs up to it too Geauxt. Not sure if Amber or Cobia would make it though...

Have you fished it yet? It could already be stocked.

I haven't but the kids have tried it with no luck. We heard that the grandson of a guy two houses down had been putting fish in it though. I think I'm gonna go ahead and drop a few in after the next fishing trip.
Like someone said...what have I got to "loose"? Lol.

We built a house last year. Had a small pond dug last summer. I was thinking about sticking it then I saw some small perch in it yesterday. Got some worms this morning and have caught probably 30 small perch and 8 small catfish: I have no idea how the fish got in the pond but we haven't put a single fish in it.

I would do it, if I were you. need to get a bream population going in it before you put in bass unless you are going to throw feed periodically.

In the winter time you can put redfish in it they will survive a good while just don't tell anyone and wait for someone else to catch them. makes for a good story when the news hits the neighborhood.

We live in a neighborhood with a few ponds. Every time my wife or myself see children playing near it or fishing we immediately call the police. Unsupervised children near ponds is dangerous.

I used to murder bass in ponds like that growing up. ( quit calling cops for kids fishing in them for Gods sake people)
Buy a few thousand bluegill bream fingerlings now and throw some fish pellets in there weekly.
Then at end of summer start catching and putting in bass.
Within a year or two kids will have a honey hole.
Total cost a few hundred bucks
The looks on little kids faces when they catch a 3-5 pounder ...priceless

Think you are on the wrong board. Most everyone in here has a 6 year old driving the four wheeler to the pond to fish.

You call the cops for kids fishing in a pond? Thats a good way to get a flaming bag of dog shite on your front step.
