State proposes major fishing enhancements at Elmer's Island

quote:

It's unlikely anglers will ever again be allowed to drive their vehicles on Elmer's Island, but the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries made a proposal Wednesday to greatly improve access to both the beach and the back lagoon of the popular fishery. Craig Gothreaux, program manager for the department, presented the proposal at the March board meeting of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority in New Orleans. As part of the plan, the department would construct an elevated boardwalk providing a much shorter route to the eastern edge of the beach, which abuts Caminada Pass. For anglers, this is the most popular and productive section of the public beach. The boardwalk would be built over the back lagoon at Elmer's, and fishing there would be improved by the installation of culverts under the road. The expectation is the culverts would improve water flow through the area, making it more attractive to baitfish and predators. The proposal also includes kayak launches, which would give paddlers easier access to productive waters protected from the high seas of the Gulf.

so a boardwalk cutting due East from the bend in the road to the point? This could be great if it happens

should just get a bunch of kids with F250s and sink them to create reefs and hold together the beach

That's going to be a long arse boardwalk, ~2 miles. That'll make access to the Caminada Pass side alot easier though.

I still wish they'd allow camping there again but realize that may never happen as people would just trash the place.

Never made that walk from the road but can imagine that's a helluva hike pulling cart full of gear. Not allowing driving on the beach helped people in boats...I had less people to fight over the breakers with

It bunched up waders close to the parking lot. Since people didnt't spread out they would go out too deep. It was retarded both times we went last year

Yeah. I just don't see how this will make it the same as it was. I fished out there a lot and cannot imagine humping all of my gear out there.

I bought a wagon and made the long walk last year. Just fished back to the parking lot the rest of the day, it wasn't bad. But I'm in good health.

this sounds like a wonderful idea, but as soon as it is finished, the land owners will start charging large increased fees for access to the beach or just to walk on said boardwalk for bird watching or whatever and they will be able to make lots of $$$ after your tax dollars paid for everything.

turn all land access rights over to the state of Louisiana for the next 100 years lease or don't spend a single tax payers dime to develop private land for private land owners who charge to allow access.

im all for better easier access but not until we the public have ownership or its wasted money to enrich the land owners and make their property more valuable
