Never fished SB so I cant offer an opinion, but the carp were certainly detrimental to Caney.

My dad helped manage farm ponds. When ponds had hydrilla issues, he'd recommend stocking 5-10 small grass carp per acre, but removing half of the fish each year. Example stocked 8, remove 4, then remove 2, then remove 1 until the pond was in equilibrium.

Cleco was great fishing. Anytime you have too many grass carp, and no grass left, they resort to rooting up the bottom like hogs, destroying spawning beds and eating fish eggs.

I was waiting for this response. SB is very different from most mad made impoundments. When it was great, it was not great because of grass. It was great due to the natural fertility of the areas and natural structure.

There is other ways to control the grass & you can control how it's done. Once them carps get going all of it will be gone & the fish will have no cover.

There is definitely a fine line between too many grass carp and just the right amount of grass carp.

The carp absolutely killed Caney. You think it's a good idea now to put the carp in there but you will be singing a different tune in 3 or 4 yrs.

Grass is hard to fish but it turns the lake in to a fish factory. Just come fish Darbonne after they drain it and see. It's take 3 yrs for the fish population to get back to normal. You will see a steady decline in numbers and size. I haven't heard of one single success story of stocking these carps in lakes.

Why did they put so damn many in? They could have put half that many in there.

I just think people that don't like or can't fish grass just aren't very good fishermen to begin with.

I'm not a big fan of stocking with carp as I believe it hurts the fishery they are stocked in, but watch the videos alx posted, they HAD to do something at spring bayou

The trick is to have grassy areas for natural nursery while having structures in other parts of the lake for habitat. You need both in a lake for the lake to be a successful fish factory.

Grass carp will clean up everything, including the nursery.

If they could net off places where they'd like grass to remain, and then remove the carp, you could establish a nursery, but you can't keep one fish in and one fish out. You'd have to restock the pond once carp are removed.

I'm guessing the same can be said about those who can't catch fish on structure after the grass is gone.

Watched that video, do the carp eat the American Lotus plant also? Only problem I see with this, is after everything is opened up, salvania will take over.

True but every time they stock them, they stock way too many. 12000 are triple what they should have put in there. They try to make a quick fix instead of thinking of the future. Those fish will live for 10+ years and be 50 to 60lbs. All the grass will be eaten by this time and they won't let any grow back. The one's on Caney would eat the grass the mowers threw in to the lake while mowing their yard.

This is a one way ticket once they are in it's hard as hell to get them out.

If you fished Caney for the last 15 yrs you better have been a good structure fishermen. These guys fishing SB better remember all the of the structure spots because that's where the fish will be. The fishing will be great for a few years then it will totally bomb out.

They have no idea. None. It's all been said already, but I'll say it one more time. SB is nothing like any of the other lakes listed here. The fishing was great before the grass. This is not about fishing grass. You cannot even get to the areas to fish them . We are talking about finger lakes that might be 6' deep.
This is not the first stocking. The first did very little good. Besides, SB has natural carp control. Eleventy billion alligators.
Cleco was ruined by factors that came after the carp.

Well maybe this will be the one and only success story for grass carp. But with SB being a shallow lake no grass will be very bad. You will see.

I will definitely be planning an early speing trip down there this year.

If it's only 6' deep, I know a group of 3 coonasses that could remove all the carp in a week if needed.
