Summit viper or an old man are probably your best all around climber in terms of value, and comfort. All new climbers should be safe. The old school API climbers have a religious following but you can't buy them anymore.
If you're looking for lightweight, summit openshot ($250) or summit specialist ($330) are both open front climbers that check in around 15#. Also, lone wolf hand climbers are light but they'll set you back almost $400. If you want a lightweight climber with a bar, then you're either looking at the summer viper elite SD ($360) or the lone wolf sit and climb. Both weighing in the 17# range.

API is the best there is. Chain is better than cable, and the teeth are best in the business.

I second API. Mine is 15 years old now. Solid as a rock 20 feet up.

I wish I knew exactly how old mine is. I know I had it in '97. I just don't know how long before that. It's really small. Not sure those small ones were made that long.

Whatever you get, wear a safety harness. I've been using a rock climbing harness for the last few years and it's very comfortable and easy. I have the Black Diamond Alpine Bod harness.
Also, add a set of stabilizer straps from Thirdhand Archery to your stand and it will feel like your climber is bolted to the tree once you get settled.

I have the aluminum old man and love it, light and easy to carry and comfortable and feels safe up there

I have the summit specialist sd and my cousin has the viper elite sd. They're the best summits when you have a long way to walk. They're solid as a rock, easy to set up, and comfortable if you change out the mesh seat. I wear a hss harness though, just in case.

I still prefer a lock on and sticks to a climber. Once you practice with it, just as effective, and you can hunt trees with limbs and whatnot...places a climber won't.

Ole Man is a great climber- as long as you are not climbing a hardwood.

Imo the old man is a quieter stand

I have an aluminum ole man and an older steel one. I like hiking with the aluminum better. Both climb pines quick n quiet.
