Little over 3 hours, with good road conditions. You have to cross over the mountain pass so in the winter it's longer

I know it's now been said, but you won't have to go farther than 2-3 hours to kill just about anything you want.
Glad someone posted the picks of the upland game in central OR (Bend is gorgeous BTW) and the Willamette valley (an hour or two south of you. The eastern side of the state (OR and WA) is heavy on agriculture. Plenty of corn, wheat, apple and cherry orchards for game to feed on. Basically you'll have a lot of different environments to hunt in so long as you decide to take advantage of it.
Oh, and sooooo much beer. OR actually has legislation in their state Senate (house unanimously passed it) to name an official state microbe. Brewer's yeast. It would take you a long time to sample all of the different beers made in the Portland area and Willamette valley.
You could make a week trip to NE Idaho and kill mountain lion if you want. That and north central WA to shoot Moose would be the only long trek you'd have to make.

Made the drive over the pass in janurary from portland to bend. Went skiing at mt. Bachelor.. stayed at a awesome cabin in sunriver..

He doesn't even need to leave the state for mountain lions, have plenty here. Especially in the NE and SW parts of the state, where the Rocky mountain elk reside (for the most part).
I started a thread about a trail I've hiked where someone spotted a lion staring at him. It was actually in WA but not far from Portland. Anyway, there are deer and elk just outside the city in the woods. Where they are, lions are.
A law was made years ago to outlaw using dogs to hunt em. The population has grown so big ranchers/farmers want to reinstate it.
When we go hike/backpack around Wallowa lake area (NE) Oregon we carry a gun. There have been many spottings.

I have several friends that live in Seattle and Vancouver. They say when they want to see the sun they head out to the san juan islands.

Just started building our ne home on Orcas Island in the San Juans. We will relocate from BR in a couple of years. Cannot imagine a better place to live. Salmon fishing, sea kayaking, sailing, etc.

My mother and sister live in Vancouver, WA so I spend a good bit of time in Portland. Nice city although I do prefer Seattle. Climate in the San Juans much better than either.

I wasn't sure about laws/seasons/tags for cats in OR. I thought I had remembered they weren't real friendly as I had a buddy who always used to go over into Idaho even though we had plenty in WA...that's good to know.
We started carrying sidearms when deer hunting around Spokane. Walked right underneath a treed cat. Almost pooped my pants. They are impressive animals. Still can't wrap my ahead around why they don't kill more hunting dogs...
Family has a cabin along the wallowa river. Used to head over to Joseph and take one of the Lostine river forks up to Eagle Cap. Sorry for getting off topic, good memories

900 miles NW, but the San Juans are not bad for a lite copy of the real thing.

From what I've been told it's fairly typical of most deer/elk hunters to just get a ML tag as well since what your hunting is also being pursued by that cat. So y'all are all in the same vicinity
You've been able to hunt them but you just couldn't use any tracking animals. quote:

I'm seriously jealous. I love that area. I wish it wasn't so far away. Makes weekend trips tough. We aren't off topic, we're talking about Oregon. Guarantee you it gets a response from our friend in AK as I know he enjoys that area too.
I've got some great memories there. From elk/deer walking right through camp to seeing a momma doe kicking my mom

Eh, wherever you move, you find people with beliefs similar to you and hang out with. My town is the most liberal in Ak, by far, and I love it here. I'm more libertarian/conservative.
