It's not so much the rain, but the almost constant cover of clouds for 9 months out of the year that worried me and my wife when we were seriously considering moving to Seattle.

It's the Sonic Ice that tripped me out. That was up in Oregon between the mountains and the coast. All damn day at random times Sonic Ice would proceed to fall from the heavens. Rain or shine, hot or cold. It would be Sonic icing.

Hunting

Many species to kill. Above average hunting IMO. Fifth largest amount of elk in the country, more than WA. Trophy hunting out east, Pendleton area etc. Tags are gotten through a lottery but anyone can go up to the counter and get a general bull tag. Cow tags are on the lottery.

Salmon/steelhead fishing is good and being in PDX gives you a lot of rivers to choose from.

No way in hell i would go there

It's an awesome place.

Line anywhere, it's easy to avoid people you don't like, and find those to hang out with that you like. It's near some pretty damn cool areas (outdoor wise) as well.

Yeah I guess I should have said the lack of sunshine instead of rain. When I visited it was only overcast for one of the three days. My buddy who was stationed there said I had no idea how lucky it was that I got two days of sun in the same week.

This is all very encouraging. How hard is it to acclimate to the grey weather?

Chalice_N_Gunderland, I hope your married b/c it's slim pickings in Portland.

I was there for a 8 days when I was single. Skied at Mt Hood and spent every night in downtown Portland and going out in the city looking for ladies. There were none to be found. In 8 days I saw 2 women I would consider pretty. That is it. I can go to one restaurant in Baton Rouge or New Orleans and pick out 3-5 pretty women. Not in Portland. That city is crawling with trolls.

Yeah this might be a good thing. I am married, and there are waaay too many hot, tanned girls in BR.

Just drive about 90 miles East. Other side of the Cascades is semi-arid and/or high desert.

I hear that much annual rainfall makes the weeds grow fast. Pack a good swing blade.

The beach is where they filmed the movie "The Goonies".

Hope that helps.

I already have a job lined up, and wouldn't have a hard time finding something in my field if that one doesn't come to fruition. The wife could find work in a week. We haven't narrowed down the exact suburb or area that we want to live in, but we enjoy the city. FWIW I have many "hipster" traits and friends. We would probably hang out if we were in the same town.

Having a job lined up is key around here, good for you.

Where do your friends live? If you can handle trendy/hipster ish ish then you've already conquered some people's #1 annoyance with the city (besides the rain).

I'd live in SE Portland if it was me but that also would depend on the location of your work. What area will that be?

Slow down dude. Oregon is hunter friendly but I wouldn't do Portland. Bend or Klamath Falls maybe. Trust me, the level of hardcore liberals in Portland will make it dangerously close to becoming one of those not so friendly gun stAtes in the near future. How about just visiting instead?

On a separate note though...Portland is home to the hamburger with a donut bun. So they got that going for them, which is nice.
