I got home yesterday to a nudist tree. Apparently lightning hit it and according to my neighbor, blew all the bark off. There was pieces of bark about 10-15ft from the truck. This tree is almost 30 years old and there's not a single piece of bark left up the first 15ft of the truck or so. Ive never seen anything like that. There's also a big split in it that runs about 10 ft long. RIP tree.

I saw a tree that got hit by lightning right off Parker by LSU's south gates. There were pieces of bark about 50 yards off in the parking lot. It's crazy how much energy gets transferred into the tree.

If its close to your house or any buildings you should go ahead and cut that baby down now... if it falls on your house your homeowners insurance usually doesn't cover dead tree damage.

I planned on hand whittling toothpicks out of the entire thing. What sucks is it's in a group of 6 trees in the front yard so a missing tree out of the group would look retarded. I might reattach the bark and see if it'll heal itself.

ETA: It's not close to the house or in any danger of falling on anything except the other trees.

thats good now you just have to worry about it getting infested with beetles or some other crap and it effecting the other 5 trees.

use Elmer's glue, it's organic, which is safer for the tree

the process of homogenieting is slow, but it should work

Throw some varnish on it. That would be sweet.

There could be some parts of the tree survive. If you see some green branches in two weeks that is the part that survived.

Not likely since all the bark got detached from the trunk. Very likely all the sap got boiled out of the trunk.

Got one of mine last week & it blew bark about 50 yards in all directions. Was gonna cut it in firewood but FIL said a tree that has been struck by lighting won't burn worth a shite. Anybody ever here of this?

Seeing that everyone commented on it, I'd say yes.

I've heard of it but not sure why. I've made firewood out of them before and didn't notice a difference.

the lightning strike burns off all the residual heat from the wood, therefore it will not burn

Maybe so. The wood should be drier. The reason trees split is the sap boiling and then finding an opening to escape as steam. But that's mostly on the surface. The heartwood has less sap than the outer half inch.
