Had nothing better to do at lunch so I wandered over to Wal Mart to see if they had any 22LR ammo. Saw a bunch of red stickers on several air rifles so I wandered over there to see what was up. Picked up a Ruger Impact 22 caliber air rifle for $69. First air rifle I've owned since my Powerline 880 I had roughly 30 years ago. I'm usually the type to research the heck out of something before I buy it but I have to admit I just liked the way it looked so I bought it. I don't really have a use or purpose for it. I'll have to build a bullet/pellet trap this weekend so I can shoot it some in the back yard. I know next to nothing about air rifles and pellets. Anyone have any suggestions on some good 22 cal pellets to try out? The two Wal Marts near my house also had a bunch of air guns on clearance too. Might be worth checking out if you are into that sort of thing. I almost bought a Benjamin Varmint Power Pack 22 for $99 but I wanted wood not synthetic so I went with the Umarex/ruger instead.

I bought a Ruger Blackhawk a year or two ago to thin out the neighborhood squirrels (plus free hawk food). Works great. But, shooting a springer takes some getting used to.

Where do you live? I'm interested but I don't believe the walmart by my house sells air rifles anymore.

I don't know much about spring piston air rifles, but I know mine is a Gamo in .22 that I got for cheap at Academy, and it drops crows with no problem. It took me a little learning, but the spring piston air rifles are very sensitive to how you hold them. Google "artillery hold for air rifles." Once I figured this out, it has been extremely accurate. I've had good results with Benjamin Discovery Hollow Point pellets that can be found at Academy. They are very accurate and heavy hitters.

I got some squirrels tearing up the house that need a good pew pew. What Walmarks did you buy this from?

I was having some raccoon and possum problems. As well as the crows and squirrels. I might have to check out WalMart tonight. That's a pretty good price.

This Wal Marks I got the Ruger at was in LaGrange, Ga. I live in Auburn though and the Wal Marks there also had air rifles on clearance, though they didn't have this Ruger or the Benjamin.

Ruger has two different types of Blackhawks? Man, that's confusing.

I used to own a Gamo Shadow 1000 back in the day. Shoots really well even though it's a .17 caliber.

If there's one thing I learned about them, it's that air rifles are absolutely brutal on scopes. Don't spend a ton of money on glass because you'll probably replace the scope multiple times.

I'll swing by the Academy on the way home from work and check out their pellet selection. The Wally World was sold out of .22 pellets.

Oh, and I've bought about 5k rounds of 22LR at Wal Mart the last couple of months so it can be had if oyu are persistent. And that 5k was buying it 3 boxes at a time.

But if you are ever at the Dicks Sporting good in Auburn they are always ate up with 22LR. Guess no real gun lovers actually shop there.

The consensus is Crosman Premier hollow points seem to be the best all around lead pellets.

This is true for piston air rifles. They will tear up any scope NOT DESIGNED FOR AIR RIFLES no matter what the brand or how much you spend. As the spring and piston are moving forward, the gun is recoiling back against your shoulder like any other rifle recoils. Next is the part that is different from your powder burning rifle. As the piston comes to the end of the compression chamber it hits the wall with a good amount of force. The gun will now be forced forward. This is the recoil that other scopes are not designed to withstand. A cheap $50 scope designed for this will actually last longer than a $1000 scope designed for a 300 Win Mag. It's all in the direction of the recoil.

Yeah, I know. Kind of unimaginative. But, really, it's a RWS34 clone, made in China with a Ruger badge. It's a good air rifle, for the money though. A Diana RWS34 for half the cost.

I have always found the Crosman Premier round nose pellets to be somewhat more accurate, but the Hollow Points are good. The Benjamin pellets are the same pellets as the Crosman Premiers from what I have heard.

Yeah I think Crosman owns Benjamin.

It's best to buy several types of pellets and see which your gun shoots best, just like any other other gun. JSB Match Diabolo Exact pellets work well for me, but mine is .177.

Definitely agree. I think the gun is the biggest factor. A couple things to keep in mind is that heavier pellets will be slower, lighter pellets tend to be less accurate.

They now make heavy recoil pellet rifle scopes that can hold up to the unusual recoil. They are $$$ but they hold zero.
