Put the scope on. Looks like the scope it hitting a good 2-3" high at 15 yards. Think I'm going to have to shim the scope. to get it close I don't think it will have that much adjustment.

So I was hitting about an inch from the top of the plate at first. Shimmed my scope and now I'm grouping just above the bullseye at 15 yards with the Crosman Premium hollow points. Switch to the Ruger something or other pellets and they are hitting 2' low compared to the Crosmans

Put about 200 pellets through it. The barrel needs to be good and broken in. Your groupings will tighten up and the gun will actually quiet down some.

ETA: About every 50 pellets I would clean the bore.

The first 40 shots or so I struggled to get a 2" group at 15 yards. After about 80 right now the groups are starting to tighten up and my fliers miss by maybe 1-2" instead of 3-4. Just put 4 pellets through the same hole in the middle of the bulls eye @ 15 yards. Don't know if the rifle is getting better or I am. Probably both :) It's seriously awesome to just go in the back yard to practice shooting technique.

Decided to put a few pellets through my Crosman Nitro Venom .22 since I haven't shot it in a while. And I had a cantaloupe going bad sitting on the counter top. Aiming for the stem base since it was the most obvious bullseye. At about 20 yards.

Still groups pretty well. Placed a couple of strays on purpose. Just to make sure I wasn't getting any flyers. Cause after a few shots I couldn't tell if I was just hitting the same spot or widely missing.

Bad fruit is always fun for target practice.

Looks like great shooting to me.

This was a combination of shooting off hand and leaning down using the arm of a deck chair as a rest. You can see I have a tendency to pull to the right. The trigger is smooth but the break is a little heavier than I would like. The 4 of the 5 shots through the bullseye were from the rest. The low flier I had was also from the rest. If I don't wrap my thumb around the back of the grip I shoot better from the rest, but I'm getting too much muzzle wandering when I do that off hand. Going to have to research what I can to to improve the brake of the trigger. It has a two stage adjustable trigger, I just have no idea what adjusting it does.

Pillage is right. Themore you shoot em, the better they get. Don't get crazy cleaning either tho, no brushes or solvent, just push a few cotton cleaning pellets every tin or so. Try some collapsible shooting sticks, helps a lot when trying to shoot minute of squirrel head groups in the field

Yeah when I said clean it after about every 50 pellets, I meant only for the break in period. Once you got a couple hundred through the bore you don't need to clean it that often. I run a bore snake through mine every few hundred or so.

The magic pellet cannot be overemphasized either. Keep trying different ones, the right one makes worlds of difference

Do they still make any good guns that aren't spring operated? Like the old pump Benjamins?

Yes the Benjamin's are still made.

And thanks for all this info, esp. The artillery hold. I'd lost hope in my Big Cat, but reinstalled the original scope, implemented the hold and bam, min of beer can at 25.

I have a gamo that is super accurate. I can hit a 3"X3" plate open sights at 60 yards consistently

A couple years ago I had a squirrel problem in the attic, so I bought a BB/pellet rifle just like the one I had as a kid. My kid and I had a blast shooting it in my game room. I bought a big box-type archery target. Figured out that 3 pumps was the perfect strength to get the BBs through the first layer, but not through the back of the box - thus, the BBs stay in the box. Put on protective glasses and we were set - had some great target shooting contests and taught him how to shoot, which led to us buying a few .22 rifles and going to the range.
Those squirrels were some smart mofos and made me look like Bill Murray in Caddyshack. But once the babies grew a bit and came out the attic, they were like a deer in the headlights. Easy pickings. But I was surprised it took about 5 pellet shots with 10 pumps from point blank range to kill them. One poor bastard was paralyzed and dragging himself across the sidewalk with his front paws while I was still popping him. I still have nightmares about that horror.

squirrels are some tough mofos. They certainly have a strong will to live.

WTF are you talking about? Is it not obvious that I'm saying that I felt bad that the poor little guy didn't die on the first shot?

When you put a at the end of your sentence it makes it seem like you enjoy torturing critters.
