Since you shoot them with an arrow it’s not catch and release huh?

Don’t shoot small or questionable ones!

But…

Not much different than throwing back a small snapper and watching them go belly up at the boat?

So long as nobody is looking.

On hook and line you don't know what's going to bite. Intelligent wildlife management would remove size limits and force you to keep whatever you caught on hook and line, toward your daily limit. Instead of culling out dead fish for the dolphins, sharks, and cudas.

Agree, but the end result is no different

I should have qualified my post by limiting it to redfish. I’ve been told that LWF is trying to blame the bow redfishing sport who kill too many.

Is it that they kill too many by shooting undersized reds and throwing them back? Or kill too many by the airboats and such destroying the habitat?

Not judging just asking?

Louisiana is literally the only gulf state that allows it.

This whole argument assumes that there are high mortality rates with catch and release fishing.

In general, that is not the case.

After being a part of shooting hundreds if not thousands of reds over the years, I can think of maybe once or twice when an undersized or oversized redfish was shot. For the small ones, you simply don't shoot them. It really is that easy. As for the big ones, you typically aren't killing more than 2 or 3 bulls a night (where I fish) so with 4 people in the boat it isn't an issue. For all types of fishing, the biggest issue is the commercial sector, plain and simple. And this is coming from someone whose family (and at one time myself) was a commercial fisherman. And pogey boats. Can't forget pogey boats.

Been on 9 trips, and never has any of us shot an undersized red. Rarely even see any undersized.

I have no issues with freedom and opportunity. Responsible bow fishing is a right that the government can only screw up. I was just pointing out how you can’t really throw back an unlawful fish once you shoot it. Same as a duck or deer I guess.

Exactly, bowfishing means shooting responsibly, but like someone else said, we rarely see small fish or bulls. It really is not hard to keep from shooting something illegal.

However, if the slot gets narrowed like the new proposal, it will be more difficult to make sure that fish is legal.

I agree with your post about implications about release of under sized fish and subsequent mortalities, which applies to bow fishing and normal spot fishing practices. However, also consider that bow under sized fish handling and release mortalities would be less than from traditional sport fishermen because of the fishing effort differences.

I was in a joint owned salt water fishing camp near Catfish Lake in Lafourche Parish and have experienced lower catch rates of both red drum and spotted seatrout in the upper marsh. Habitat nursery habitat loss for red drum, spotted seatrout, and other species are a significant factor.

P.S. I have a retired marine biologist with the State with a MS degree in Fisheries Science with LSU.
