Looks like a buttermilk racer. Those things are assholes, as are all racers. They will chase you for the hell of it.

Checking in to say I killed a 5' long water moccasin today. My buddy tried to tell me it was a chicken snake, but he's one of those fakers that pretend they aren't scared of snakes.

For the record, I know now I didn't need to kill this thing, but I am very new to being around snakes and to the idea that I shouldn't kill them all.

This is a rat snake? Does that mean it eats rats? Because I would appreciate a snake that reduces the rat population.

Eastern sand racer. Mean lil' buggers but harmless.
Saw a lot of 'em in costal Georgia and Florida, but never in Louisiana....yet.

Not bulky enough for a cottonmouth. A little long for a CM as well.

Wife sent me a picture of dead snake neighbor killed this week. 100% copperhead. Strangely it was a juvenile 8" long and did not have a yellow tail. I was under the impression all juvenile cottonmouths and copperheads had the yellow tail.

I knew it wasn't a cottonmouth. It was worth killing so my ignorant self could get a good look at the kind of snake I don't need to worry about.

Man, I've never seen anything like that before Alex. And I've been "into" snakes for a long time as well. If you look at it closely it has a racer head and slim racer body. And with your description of it's "attitude" it is some sort of racer variant. Now to see if I can find it on google. Thanks for posting. Neat creature.

These are not my specialty by any means but I would say is definitely a racer variant. Sweet looking specimen.
