sorry for horrible quality, phones camera is broken/scratched to hell. Didn't kill it with fire but he got a baseball bat to the head. Pretty sure he is venomous but either way he had to go, found him in the main walkway at a kids baseball park.

Diamond back water snake.

100% no chance he is poisonous. Venomous maybe but not poisonous.

Even though it's a little gray colored, I agree with diamondback water snake.

You missed a good opportunity to show the kids how to properly ignite a snake

These are my favorite threads.

I've learned a lot about snakes on this board, to the point I'm only a bit scared of them now instead of paralyzingly fearful.

Can't see the picture due to filters here at work, but regardless of what kind of snake it is, there is no real reason to kill it. In fact, by getting close enough to kill it you are putting yourself at a much greater risk of getting bit.

Plus, now, what you have taught the kids around at the time is that you are scared of a harmless snake. That's something to be proud of, eh?

I'm actually scared of those. Frickers will bite as many times as it takes to get stuck to your arm

Yep. They are mean. I have a bunch of them around my house. Kids always want to catch them. My little blonde 7 yr old girl is going to get hammered by one someday.

Only thing I've ever encountered with more natural hate for humans is the Buttermilk Racer.

Does it look like any of these?

You can also email your picture to Jeff Boundy (his email address is on that page). He's the snake biologist for the department and is usually pretty good about responding if he's in the office.

I've sent numerous pics to him for ID.

Diamondback water snake - most have a darker r brownish background, but they do show a lot of variation. The lighter ones like that are easier to identify because the diamond pattern stands out more. Where I grew up on the 40 arpent canal in da Parish, 90% of the water snakes we caught were diamondbacks. Only saw 3 moccasins in 15 years there, ironically - despite seeing water snakes by the 100s. Jump over across the flood wall and you'd see Browns, Greens, Broad-bandeds, Gulf Salt Marsh, etc. It's amazing how drastic species populations can change in adjacent areas.

ETA: They are completely harmless. They can have a nasty temperament, but they are not exactly quick when it comes to striking, so they are pretty easy to catch without being bitten. Here's the biggest one I've ever caught - way back in the day, around late '70s when I was around 12 or so. No foot in the pic, but I should get bonus points for the short shorts and sexy legs.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but the LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has a pretty neat app for the iPhone for snake and waterfowl identification.
