Shotgun for home defense, you still need to aim!.

A shotgun is a excellent firearm choice for home defense, but every thread on the subject will usually have someone recommending getting a shotgun for the ability to just generally "point and shoot" taking out the bad guy and the whole living room wall behind them.

This 1 minute video demonstrates that at 15 feet or less a short 12ga loaded with 00 buck is not much different than a rifle.

I've read somewhere on here that you just spray. Don't need to aim.

Also shoot from the hip. That's important.

Hold it sideways like a brutha.

You are half right.
BUT you point a shotgun, not aim one. Your hands go where ever you eyes are focused. Just like pointing your finger at a light switch across the room.

For self defense I'm aiming a shotgun, but yes when hunting or breaking clays I don't aim.

I disagree, at only 12’ or less from your muzzle pointing at center mass isn’t that difficult. Truth be known probably don’t have to aim a rifle either. It would be a pretty noticeable angle to point a long gun away from someone inside 5 yds when the gun itself eliminates 20% of the distance.

It actually isn't that great for firearm novices, which is often the very folks to which it is directed.
A shotgun has, generally, unforgiving recoil - particularly 12 gauge with buckshot or slugs (the most effective defense rounds). They sell them with pistol grips ("cruiser" style) and folding stocks, which is exactly the configuration you might want to store/transport them in, but a novice thinks they can shoot these guns accurately from the hip.
With hilarious results. Most folks would be better suited with a rifle, and I would recommend an AR-15 platform. Not because it's the best (which is subjective), but it is a fantastic platform, all around - and particularly a novice can pick up and fire such a weapon more proficiently at round 1, and will more quickly become proficient than almost any other firearm on the market. The other advantages should be obvious over shotguns and pistols - range, firepower, recoil, etc.
Just my $0.02.

I won’t post my TL;DR post from the previous thread where this topic came up. But I agree that going by hard facts, the AR15 is a better all-around home defense weapon. And again if anyone wants to challenge any point I made I would be willing to discuss.

the biggest issue with a self defense gun for your home is what happens when fired.
bullets from a riffle or handgun will go through walls and doors, possibly killing your kids or others as a result.
a shotgun is the safest weapon in that regard

with what ammo? buckshot will go though many layers of sheetrock. .223/5.56 rounds will begin to tumble after hitting sheetrock.

i can attest to this as a neighbor had a break in new years eve. we share a back alley, his 5 shots from a .40 caliber handgun, 3 went through his fence and mine, only a crepe mrytle deflected these from going through my living room french doors another 2 shots I found in my roof.
he has a shotgun now for home defense

I don't know if this is the video bap always posts, but here goes:
Keep in mind - for the shotgun blast, the walls "gave" (they all tumble to ruin the suspense) - so IRL, the wall will hold up and allow the pellets to carry more energy through.

Did none of them hit the perp?
No - that's why we need all those hi-cap pistols - to miss a lot. But, at least it scared him, right?

sounds like you should take the shotgun away from him as well and give him a can of spray mace.

Nah. The only ammo worth using for home defense in a shotgun is buckshot (birdshot is stupid) and that is certainly more dangerous through sheetrock than a rifle round.

This is where being prepared and knowing your house inside and out comes into play. Knowing exactly how your gun patterns with a certain shell at certain distances, knowing which walls no one can be behind, knowing anything else that might come into play. I've patterned 00 Buckshot through mine at 5, 10, and 15 yards, the longest shot possible in my house. At 5 and 10 there is one big ugly hole. At 15 there were a couple of flier pellets occasionally, but mostly still a tight pattern. You definitely have to aim. They also went through about 3-4 sheets of drywall. I had two on a stud, about 5 feet of space, then two more on a stud, to imitate how it is actually hung in a house. I wouldn't want to be on the other side of two walls with it being shot.

I definitely agree at the same time, I believe in minimizing any variables if at all possible. I use 5.56 because I know it has less energy after penetrating sheetrock than buckshot. You never know how these situations play out and while knowing how your house is structured and the layout is important, you may have to take less than ideal shots in a situation if it is your only chance to stop a threat. I would be way more comfortable if my margin of error is increased on where the bullet goes if there is a miss.
