i think he missed.
according to his story he was on one knee towards the front of his house, around a hallway opening firing at this back door. he shot as / right after the back door was kicked open.
we originally thought 2 shots hit the perp as only found the 3 holes in the fence... no blood though which was strange however it was like 10 degrees out that night so figured perps hoodie could have absorbed any blood for a few blocks anyway or at least that was our theory.... a week or two later found a bullet in the roof and another spot that looks like a bullet hit it...
bullet holes in fence don't line up to be the ones that ended up in roof... we live in dallas so he might have gotten magic bullets from the place lee harvey bought his...

Are you assuming the OP's race?

bullets from a riffle or handgun will go through walls and doors, possibly killing your kids or others as a result.
Depends on bullet construction and velocity. 55gr FMJ out of a AR will shatter quickly and have very little chance of over penetration. Most light weight, high velocity projectiles will deviate from their aimed path and loose energy after striking their first object. .38 caliber balls of lead from buckshot will go through multiple walls and will not deviate from their original path as easily.

Most folks would be better suited with a rifle, and I would recommend an AR-15 chambered in .45 ACPplatform. Not because it's the best (which is subjective), but it is a fantastic platform, all around - and particularly a novice can pick up and fire such a weapon more proficiently at round 1, and will more quickly become proficient than almost any other firearm on the market. The other advantages should be obvious over shotguns and pistols - range, firepower, recoil, etc.
Added some to it...

00 buckshot is actually a terrible idea for home defense. Use #4 buckshot if you’re dead set on a shotgun. An AR15 with red dot wml and self defense rounds will serve you way better if you got other people in the house.

Home defense I like the ability to shoot w one hand if needed. Huge tactile advantage to me

This video starting at 3:50 shows that a light load of #8 birdshot from a 12ga will penetrate a home's interior wall of typical construction, a heavy load of #8 birdshot will go through two interior walls, but with minimal energy left after the second wall, or 4th layer of drywall. 12ga 00 buck will penetrate 3 walls including a wall with exterior lap siding, and still have enough energy to kill someone standing outside your house.

Just a couple of thoughts;
I have a hard time believing 223 isn't equally as deadly behind a wall as any other projectile.
I don't trust ammo that won't penetrate drywall to stop a real threat. (Looking at you bird shot)

Why would anyone use buckshot or slugs in the 10-20 ft ranges home defense requires.
Someone posted a video of low brass 8 shot going thru a sheet rock wall with ease, what do you think that is going to do your perps chest ? He is not going to keep doing whatever he was doing.
Birdshot won't go thru all the walls and kill your kids and neighbors.
