Friends house burned down with a browning safe the guns were ruined still money that was in a fire box in the fire resistant safe was even charred so bad that the bank almost didn't take it back BUT!! browning paid for his guns and sent him a brand new bigger safe to his new house once he got it built

I'm mostly concerned with keeping my shite locked up from drunk friends and meth heads. If my house burns down or a pile of professionals break in while I'm on a week long work trip I'll have bigger problems than loosing some guns and tax returns.

Unfortunately most of those flimsy door safes can be hacked by a novice with a pry bar in a few minutes. If the house was ever broken into a safe is a beacon that says valuables are here. If the door jam has a decent sized gap and flexes when pried they're going to do their best to break inside.
I do agree if the goal is to keep drunken friends from playing with your guns any safe will do. A locking closet door would do too. It's just important to know the limitations of your safe. Many people buy a big box store safe and only get the illusion of security. It wouldn't be wise to store a decent amount of cash, gold, or jewelry in a composite safe.

It's pretty discouraging that $1000 gets you a sheet metal box. Somebody with a brain would just steal my metabo and cut the side out of it in about 15 minutes.
I would think I could get a really good one for $1000, especially since I don't need a big one.

Go to youtube and search "Gun safe burglary break in test #1" there are at least 4 different videos of a guy trying to break into a Steelwater safe.
I'm not saying get that brand, but it was pretty impressive.
Somebody I work with was in the market for one and we watched a ton of videos on youtube. If you watch too many you will find out that eventually, if someone wants whats in your safe....they are gonna get it.

Sometimes Amazon has really good deals on some with cosmetic defects. I got a $1400 safe from them for $800 delivered. Only flaw was the paint had a chip in it about half the size of a dime.
I also learned from a fire chief the best location to place your safe. First have it on an outside wall where it will stay much cooler during a fire. Preferably, you want it on the front wall of the house or where the firemen will initially spray if there is a fire. To deter break-ins, have it in the corner of this wall to where the hinged side is farthest from both walls. When bolted down, this will give very little leverage to pry the door open, as the other wall will be in the way of the pry bar. You can also enclose it using fire retardant sheetrock to where it looks like an extended closet. With an alarm system, I don't see too many people being able to break into this in a reasonable amount of time, unless it's an inside job.
By the way, it is a piss poor idea to store ammunition in a gun safe. It dramatically lowers the level of fire protection. Rounds will start cooking off before the firearms' maximum allowable temperature is ever reached, which will then accelerate the rising temperature even faster.

There's no way I would keep ammo in it. That's just wasting space.
I need 6 long guns, 3 handguns, and room for some folders. I should be able to get a regular ol safe for that

All I've derived from this is that there's no options for a good heavy safe for $1000.
Im buying a $500 fire rated one. There doesn't seem to be any advantage is doubling the price other than getting one twice as big, which I don't need/want.

Check out Mesa. The size you want probably runs under $1000 and they seem well made for the price. Fire rating is for 1 hour at 1400 deg. compared to 30 minutes for most in that price range. Look at the actual weights of the safes too when searching. Better built ones will naturally weigh more.
