I seriously considered and looked in to opening one in the Prairieville area, but someone else beat me to it. I think they're opening at the end of the year though.
Slickback.... have you actually priced the construction? Because it ain't cheap.. +/- $15,000 a lane.

:whoa: No I haven't gotten that far. Why so much? Besides obvious bulletproofing.
I was thinking I'd find a place with a little land, 6 or 7 indoor lanes, 5 or 6 outdoor lanes, and a few skeet shooting stations.
You in the business?

Thanks for all the reaponses guys. It seems like bass pro and precision are our best options. Which has more lanes? Which would be better on a saturday afternoon?

Bass Pro only has 4 or 6 lanes and is pistol only...

I think they are about the same size. I'd assume they'd have less people at Precision.

Precision is your best bet in BR, but it is usually quite busy on Saturday afternoons.

Looking at opening one her win Houston. Building is purchased, permits in hand, financing almost 100% solidified, but finalizing a few insurance requirements.
Been a two year road and there is much more that anyone would every think.
Biggest up-front cost is the HVAC. Biggest on-going cost is backstops / cleaning of backstops.

I figured there would be several hidden costs.
Is insurance pretty steep? At first you would expect it to be outrageous, but I'm not so sure. I asked our commercial agent but he said he never dealt with one.

I think y'all are seriously discounting Sherburne. It's like 35 minutes away from BR, FREE, has a rifle range, pistol range, and skeet (weekend). No one is ever there except for about a month before deer season sighting in rifles. And you can sling your kayak in the back of the truck and catch some bass/sacalait after/before you shoot right there in Big Alabama Bayou next to the range. So you guys wanting to open ranges to cater to the BR crowd if you do it further than 20 minutes from me I'll still be going to Sherburne unless your rifle range is 200+ yards.

No hidden costs at all.

I've never been to Sherburne. I'll have to go check it out, especially if I can catch fish there too.
From Prairieville, I can't hardly get to Bluebonnet in 35 minutes some days. I think a nice one in Prairieville would do great.

what about Palo Alto Rifle Range?

Ended up going to Diamond Shooting range on Choctaw. Not super nice, but exactly what we needed. 6 lanes, not busy, and very nice owner.
Negative was that it is kinda dark( little light where you stand in the "box"), and someone in there was shooting a shotgun that was really loud indoors- I had to put ear plugs and muffs on top of that.
I will definitely be going back.

Went to Diamond for the first time a few weeks ago, but I don't think I'll be going back. The ventilation on the range is just really poor.
I was initially the only one on the range when a guy showed up with his new AK and a drum magazine. By the time he emptied the magazine you could damn near taste the lead and powder in the air, so I left at that point. Sneezed out a bunch of dark grey crap later that day after I got home. Blowing out lead colored boogers sucks.

I read that opening a shooting range has a startup cost of like $1M.

so for sherburne, you need at least a fishing permit to be at since its WMA?
Posted on 3/12/12 at 1:34 pm to joejohnson90
Fishing or hunting license, and also have to fill out a "self clearing permit"...basically just a card that you can pick up by the rifle range and lists when you got there, when you left, what you were doing, etc.
Hadn't ever paid any attention to the self-clearing permit requirement until a DWF agent showed up when I was at the pistol range a few weeks ago. In lieu of issuing citations he gave us a lecture and pointed us to where to get self clearing permits.

What are the details on this? What are the pistol targets?
And you need a fishing/hunting license to go?

Ranges have wooden target stands that can be moved to various distances. You have to bring your own targets to attach to the stands (and a staple gun if you want to do it quickly). Be sure that everyone on the range knows that the range is cold (no one even handling a firearm) before anyone goes downrange to attach or move targets.
For the license/permit info, here's a link to the La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries handbook. (large pdf document) You'll find WMA rules on page 23.
