The problem with calling the guy trashy is that you are only doing so based on the type of animal. If we were talking about chickens that no longer laid eggs or cows that no longer calved no one wold have a problem with killing the animal.

Domesticated dogs? You bet. Particularly if it is someones pet. Wild dogs are another story.
Your comparisons are those of a simpleton. The kind of behavior you describe give all rednecks a bad name.

When my dogs get too old to retrieve they do not get shot.

As someone that grew up on a farm and a dog lover myself..I see both sides. I have one dog now after having put one down a couple of months ago and was one of the hardest things to do. I also see the point of the animal owner that uses them as tools. IMO, that's what they're given to us for, to use as tools. If someone raises and uses their dogs like I do a cow, then I have no problem with it. So long as it's done humanely. If the animal was raised to hunt and didn't and someone chooses to put it down, so be it, as long as it's not tortured. On the other hand, one of my best pets growing up was a bird dog that someone had run wire through it and nailed to a tree we found. She lived and healed up and was one of the best pets I ever had. That owner shoulda been charged with a crime. It was clear she didn't hunt and that's why he did it, but there's no excuse for abusing the animal.

Yeah, some people are incapable of telling the difference between a wild, stray animal and a pet. Taking someones pet can be traumatic to them, no matter how anyone else may feel about the animal.
Spent a winter as a handler for a sled dog kennel. We also had recovering wolves and hybrids. Gave a malamute to a guy to train as a pulling dog, and he killed it. Pretty much was his undoing in the community.

Please tell me what right Jimmy has that allows his dog to come on my property?
He has a right to own a dog. He has a right to enjoy his dog on his property. He has the RESPONSIBILITY to care for and control that dog.
As an adult, I realize that not all occurances are controllable as I stated earlier and would discuss proper dog ownership with Jimmy twice and potentially more than that depending on the situation before taking action.
However, there is no overlapping of rights here.
FWIW if you pen his dog you are and can be charged for stealing his animal.

Not necessarily. If La law is similar to Bama law in any way, he could actually charge the owner a boarding fee for keeping the animal as it had strayed on his property.

WTF are you talking about? You are allowed to detain a pet if it comes on YOUR property. It is the proper thing to do.

There are different laws in differnt states. I know in MO it is considered theft, Im fairly sure in TX it is too unless you immediately notify the owner (so that the next time you hunt you can spend your day chasing and detaining a dog again)
bama- I agree no animal should be tourtured. Since a bullet to the brain is swift and painless I do not consider this tourture.
Since the explanations I have given have failed to enlighten you Roger, maybe you would like to play this one out.
If your neighbors pet cat continually comes in your yard and claws up your yard furniture and window sreens what do you do?

Cat is going in a cage until the owner picks it up. There is NO state that would consider this illegal.

I agree with plan so far. So that night the neighbor comes home thanks you for catching his cat and appologizes for the damage. He then walks in his yard and lets it lose. The next morning you have more damage.

Dogs aren't able to discern property lines. If you kill someone's pet you can be in serious trouble. Would you really shoot a lab or bird dog with a collar?

Call a shelter. Very simple. It's his pet he can pick it up there.

Ok, Im still on board. So the neighbor picks up the cat at the shelter pays the 75 dollars and brings it home. He once again appologizes for the damage. The next day you see the cat in your yard and the next night you are awken to the cat tearing at one of your window screens trying to cath a moth.

Cage it, call shelter.

do you really think they have any more beef with me for shooting than they do with Mac truck for hitting it when it was crossing the road to get on my lease?
maybe because you are actually trying to kill the dog?

Sorry the cat has caught on that you like to put it in a cage and will not let you get near it. It runs away (back home). Being a mindful neighbor you dont try to capture it in its own yard. The damage continues however, and this morning leaving for work you notice the pungent smell of cat urine sprayed on your front door.
ETA: you also notice that the birds you like watching at your feeders are no longer coming to the feeders for unknown reasons.
next move?

Kill the damn cat by now. Neither it or its owner can take a hint! Cats are nowhere near as equal as a dog in this conversation.

For a family doctor you have some fricked up logic on killing a pet because it gets in the way of your fricking hobby.
