I fish cat island pretty frequently but have a deep V 19'. Like others have said, it can go from slick calm to rough as frick pretty quick in the MS sound. I agree with the "take the guys but not the family" posts

I've gone to Cat Island in an 18ft Bayliner. No issues. Was flat heading out but 2-3ft swells heading back in.
I've also done it on a 2 seater Sea-Doo. Same thing. Flat heading out. Swells heading in later. That was rough coming back.
As others said, if it's with family, take the ferry.

quote:yes. Happened to my Dad and us crammed into a cuddy cabin in a 25' Grady White numerous times. He used to take us out there all the time and the times it got bad were always on the way back in. Those storms move between the mainland and islands so fast you just can't outrun them.
eah, i have just heard stories about people going out when it was fine then it was horrible on the ride back.

Funny Cat Island story. One morning, we were heading out to trout fish the south side of Cat to really accomplish nothing other than killing time until sun got high enough to triple tail hunt. We came around the bird cage and there was a bateau up by the bank on the flat. It was 6:30ish on a weekday morning and we were the only two boats out there. We passed him probably 300 yards off of the bank, and it looked like he was waving us down.
We headed over to him to see what was up, and his ol lady was sitting on the bow of this 16' bateau with her arms crossed looking like she was ready to end something's life. Come to find out, the dude had killed his battery running flounder lights some time the night before, and couldn't get his motor cranked. They had slept out there on this bateau (probably a 1648) in the middle of the summer. We jumped him and sent him on his way to fit 2 footers to make it back to Pass Christian.
Not sure whether he's still married or not .

Some folks have a hard time telling the difference between can and should.

Do it. I've seen worse out there. You live on the coast over here?

I am looking to bring my boat there next weekend if they finish replacing my transom. I have taken Fort Bayou all the way to the shed and also done the Biloxi river. I want to ride the pascagoula river since my cousin lives in Ocean Springs.
Any recommendations for that area?

This time of year, I wouldn't do it. Come mid-May and on you shouldn't have a problem with a boat that size. I've been to Horn and East & West Ship many times in a 14 footer and south of them in a 16 footer, but that was with my fishing buddy who's been navigating those routes by himself since he was 12 years old. The ride back in with a bad SE or SW wind takes a lot of skilled tacking in the swells, headlong crashing into them will swamp a bay boat quickly or damage your hull. I'd never bring kids out there without having a deep-V hull with high gunnels or something like the cuddy cabin rig in meauxjeaux's pic.
