Family has been wanting to go to ship island and i was thinking about bringing the boat instead of taking the ferry. What do y'all think, too risky?

Yeah, i have just heard stories about people going out when it was fine then it was horrible on the ride back.

There's a lot of wisdom in this post. Listen to this, OP.

Had boat full of Asians pull up rig next to us in 18 ft express in 2-3s. Caught their 15 and rolled out.

So the nose of boat come two inches from full swell when they were tying up.

good plan...no point in having to worry about your safety because you made a bad decision.

OP, you know that the laws are different once you break out in the gulf as far as what is needed on a boat for safety?

There are other islands to the east that you can do just across the cut. Nice get a ways with the family. Just look for a high pressure front that sits over that area and seas will be flat.

My 70 y/o dad has been in a kayak 2-3x. So not impossible. Always had support from some bateau smaller than the Express you have. Just be aware, shite can get nasty quick In That shallow Missisippi sound area.

The ferry will easier when it is all said and done but with a decent weather eye that boat would be ok for the trip.

I see much worse choices on the barrier islands fairly often, I would imagine there are some puckered holes from time to time though.

I've spent many a night anchored out there, and it can go to hell in a handbasket in an instant. Definitely not a good idea.

What's the smallest boat that's safe to take out there? 20? 22?

family = no, boys = yes.

I've went out on bluebird days from pass christian in our 18' whaler and had some weird squalls come out of nowhere and kick our arses. ferry for the win. you can still walk out to the secluded parts of the beach. just bring a good pair of sandles. that deck gets hot.

that's an impossible question to answer as the weather is not the same every day. In the mornings in the summer it's usually flat, you can get there on a sheet of plywood and a hand mixer. But in the afternoons the tstorms can kick the sound up to be dangerous for any boat regardless of size

as always, make decisions based on specifics (the weather that day) and not generalities

Honestly if you know how you handle a boat, it's not a big deal when it gets rough in an 18' boat. It's sketchy and uncomfortable, but you're fine.

That said, don't take the family.

I have done it on 16ft hobie cats, see a few jet skis from time to time, run across the odd john boat at Cat island . Have once even seen pontoon boats inside of Horn, none of which would I suggest for a family trip.

Any decent sized Bay boat is more than capable of surviving the MS sound, it can turn into a very uncomfortable ride however.
