Salmon Based Dog Food

Our big ole dog has been scratching and itching a lot over the last couple of weeks. We noticed this weekend that his armpits were red and inflamed. Wife brought him to the vet this morning and it turns out he has developed a skin allergy. The vet recommended that we put him on a Salmon-based dog food.
For those of you that feed your dog this type of diet, what brand of food should I look into that is fairly budget-friendly? This dude eats a lot so I'd rather not spend $70 a bag if possible. He's around 95lbs and is roughly 1.5 years old so we can now take him off puppy food.
Thanks,

Not doubting your vet, but you might want to look into a second opinion. Allergies in dogs are very often misdiagnosed. This includes food allergies. My dogs are all itching right now because it's just plain hot and humid and they develop hot spots that we treat with hydrocortisone. Just have to keep them clean and dry when it's this hot or they get dermatitis. Same thing happens to humans. Having said all of this, investing in a good food source is never a bad idea.

With higher quality food, your dog will eat less. Cost is gonna be a marginally more, but people have the misconception that the dog is going to eat the same amount as before. I haven't kept track, but if I had to guess, one 15lb bag lasts almost a month for my 85lb lab.
If he really needs salmon, try EVO Salmon. What I'm thinking is that your dog needs something higher in omega 3 and 6 fats than what you're giving him. Those effect the skin from what I've seen over multiple dogs. Feed stores will have the higher quality stuff, but read labels and compare the omega fat values. People have no idea how much food can effect a dog's skin and fur. Food changes can fix hot spots and skin "allergies" within a week.
My dog gets EVO Red Meat or Orijen Adult depending on the time of year. Feed your dog what they recommend for his size on the bag, or else he'll blow up like a blimp.
This is going to be his last bag of Orijen because they opened up a facility that makes food specifically for the American market in Kentucky. This facility is in the middle of a bunch of agricultural facilities with lots of runoff, and is only like a mile from an active Superfund site. They also just raised the price and reduced the amount in each bag (specifically for American market). The Canadians will still be getting the same quality and amount, but Americans will not.
My dog couldn't shite for a few days, and then had the runs for a few days after his second day on the American mix. Dude still ain't right. Never ever happened on the Canadian stuff. So....dont buy Orijen

Vets are often wrong with foods and diet. If this is something he has just developed, Id look elsewhere first and see whats changed with his daily routine/food.If he has dry skin, one option is to add salmon fish oil to his food in a pill form or out of a squirt bottle on top.

ETA: hammer said what I wanted but in way more words.

Thanks for all the great info. I will do some research before we make the switch. He's been eating Iams Large Breed Puppy since we got him and this is the first time he's shown any type of allergy. It's time to switch him to an adult food anyway, so either way he will be getting new food after this sack is done. Dropping some fish oil in his current food is a good idea to get us by for now.
I did some research a while back on grain-free food but forgot what all I read, so I'll start over.
Thanks again

I alternate between Purina Pro Plan salmon flavored and chicken flavored. My GSP likes them both and has a great coat and skin

Don't switch from one food one morning to another that afternoon unless you like smelling dog farts and having your dog diarrhea up your yard. Do it gradually over a week.
FWIW, the EVO Salmon made my dog smell funky. EVO Red Meat doesn't, and has similar ingredient levels. The labels will show everything

I have fed my Vizla 4Health from Tractor supply from day 1 and I really like it. My wife's has a house cat that started scratching herself bald. Vet said food allergies. After trying several brands, I bought the 4Health cat food. Stopped scratching he next day and hasn't since

Do you have a Costco close to you? They have some house brand dog food (Kirkland) that is really good and grain free.

Purina Pro Plan Sport has a salmon based food. I feed my lab that and the purina one true instinct tuna and salmon formula. It has been very good for his skin.

Costco food. It could be any of the ingredients in your food. Try different ones until it stops. If no Costco then get diamond from the feed stores. Same brand I'm pretty sure.

I recommend two brands. And I have tried a great majority of them (Acana, Merrick, Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo, Blackwood, etc.), due to my dog having an allergic reaction (now know what caused it - carrots of all things).
1. Canidae Life Stages All Life Stages Formula Dry Dog Food
2. Holistic Select Adult & Puppy Health Salmon, Anchovy & Sardine Meal Recipe Grain-Free Dry Dog Food
Holistic is great, however it is pricey. Canidae is just as good and less expensive. $50 for a 44 lb. bag.
Victor is another good brand of dog food, however it has carrots in it and I can't use it for my dog. Runs about a $1 per pound.

Our retriever is allergic to the world (we had allergy tests done and anything with chicken or corn is a no-go for us) so we had to find something fish-based for her to eat; this has done as good a job as anything we've tried in our price range; goes for about $1.50-$1.75/lb if you buy a 30-pound bag:
