My wife to a S&W 38 Special from her Dad that he got from the Baton Rouge Police. It is to big for her small hands. I got a S&W M&P 9mm Shield, but she did not like it. She needs something to just point and shoot. So I am looking at another revolver. I am thinking of a 9mm being I have more 9mm ammo than 38 special. I am thinking it would have less recoil also than the 38.

Any suggestions. This will be mainly for her nightstand and not as a concealed carry.

I started with a similar approach as you...9mm compact pistol, then a 38 revolver. Ended up settling on a S&W M&P 380EZ. Wife can easily work the slide and the recoil is manageable. I'd rather her have something that she is comfortable shooting than something that has the 'best ballistic coefficient,...".

Whatever you look at try not to get the lightest option. The recoil will be much more.

Model 642 airweight. No thinking on how to operate. Point and pull the trigger. No hammer to get snagged on anything on the draw. Chances are she is not going to gun battle anyone so more than five shots are probably not needed. No need to complicate things by introducing an auto that could fail to feed from a limp wrist hold. Simple and reliable, point and pull the trigger with almost 100% results.

Small revolvers kick like a mule. I would get something with some weight to it or a semi auto. Semis point amd shoot same as a revolver.

Right. Same as what I was saying above. Next post someone posts "air weight" pistol. Give that to an inexperienced woman then bring her to the range. She will be terrified of it.

I don’t see why 38spl would have more recoil than 9mm. They’re pretty comparable.

If she will carry it some, then I strongly vote for the Ruger LCR. I have one and it’s great. Way smoother than the Taurus 605 it replaced. Not too light so it shoots nicer than the airweight S&W.

Get the 357 model but carry 38. The extra heft of the 357 model makes it real nice to shoot 38.

If it really is a nightstand gun then don’t even get a snubnose. Get any full size 357 (at least a 4 inch barrel) and load it with good quality 38+P self defense rounds. S&W, Ruger, Colt, Taurus or any mainstream manufacturer all make reliable revolvers.

Ruger LCR in .22

This will start a big debate but something she can handle that goes bang is the goal. 8 rounds

I tell my wife when we practice to shoot them all.

Have you let her try a full size 9mm semi?

No reason to go small if she isn’t carrying the gun. Hell, look at an AR pistol with a brace for that matter.

A Ruger SP101 might be just be a great solution if it fits her hand. Shoot .38 Specials in it.

Women and old people always have the revolver thing stuck in their head like it's their saving grace, when they're anything but.

Get her a 365 with a comp or a G19. If she can't hold a Glock 19, then she shouldn't be carrying a gun anyway.

Giving someone who can't shoot a gun to begin with is basically a death trap, but giving them a 22Mag or 380 that is just going to piss off the burglar/assailant is even dumber.

Tell her to go to the gun store. Find a compact or micro 9 that she likes the feel of and then go make her shoot 500 rounds. That's the only way a gun in her hands is not going to get her killed quicker than if she didn't have one.

Went through similar scenario with my wife, ended up with a lady smith, she is proficient and comfortable with it
I got her some low recoil ammo to get started but she shoots regular ammo now and has no complaints
Hell, I like the gun so much I find myself using it as a pocket gun sometimes when wearing shorts

She will actually practice with this. A 38 kicks pretty good for a LCR.

This is where the numbers simply don’t back this up. Robbers don’t get pissed off when they get shot or shot at. They get out of there asap.

If you get shot in the chest with a .22 you’re not going stop and count the grains of the bullet inside you to decide to continue or not.
