This is the second article I have seen on this subject in the last week or so. The other article was on the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch facebook page. I can't seem to find it though.

quote:

Researchers keep on finding evidence that deer like a protein snack of bird from time to time. Deer eating birds opportunistically seems to be a wider-spread phenomenon than we previously thought. Scientists in North Dakota watching song birds via “nest cams” in a recent study found whitetails raiding more nests than either foxes or weasels.

I hear that deer do this in areas where they receive less calcium (they chew on the bones for calcium intake).

I had a small doe milling around under my stand back during the season and the only reason she left was because she was chasing a finch or something out of the clearing. I thought she was just playing with it because she was so young, I guess she was trying to eat it.

So the boom in the deer population is what's leading to the decline in the bob white population.

I have seen deer eating fish around a pond that was recently drained. I am talking about 7 deer all feeding on dead fish.

Always heard that Bucks get a sort of osteoporosis when growing their antlers. Also imagine a doe will have major mineral deficiencies during gestation
