Weatherby used to make (and might still make) a rifle I think called the Vanguard that was sold in 308 and 7mm-08 and came with both a youth stock and an adult stock. Good MOA guarantee. My son learned to y deer hunt with it and it grew with him and he still uses it.

If I’m not mistaken, the new ones all come with Timneys.

The Remington 700 also utilizes a X-Mark Pro externally adjustable trigger

Not sure if this is the same thing you are talking about.

Nah, I'm pretty sure they are using timmney triggers in all the new 700's.

Tikka t3 308 for a couple od hundred more. 1” groups out the box. That tactical bull barrel will be heavier.

The x-mark pro is the older trigger. RemArms announced that they would be using timney on all 700s now (edit: as of July 1st) but Im sure they’ve still got some models with the x-mark pro. I don’t remember it being terrible, but not as light as I wanted, so I replaced it with a timney.

Edit: I just found out the new 700s (except for alpha 1) come with the impact 700 timney trigger which is none adjustable 3-4 lbs.

The new Ruger American Gen 2 is around that and supposed to be a hell of a shooter.

Supposedly they are. I haven't put my hands on a new 700 yet. The extreme lack of bad reviews on the internet leads me to believe they are doing much much better.

Go with a Ruger American Standard 308. They run about $460.

I have an old Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag and a last year production 700 in .308. Both work great and do the job. I had to drop down to the .308 due to medical conditions. Killed a 4 point last year and an 8 point this year with it. With that said, I got my daughter a Ruger American in 7mm08. Good rifle. Would not hesitate to buy either.

Good gun. Good caliber. But don't get that heavy barrel on a hunting gun. You'll regret it.

I have that exact gun and use it for longer shots.
Swapped the trigger for a timmney and it’s a legit 1/2 MOA.
It’s pretty heavy at close to 10lbs as I think it’s designed to be more of a bench gun.
Doesn’t bother me though.

There are 2 versions of that rifle. SPS which has a 20” barrel and weighs 7.5 lbs and balances very well. The other version is a SPS varmint with a 26” bull barrel and weighs 8.5 lbs. I’ve owned both and prefer the 20” barrel. The 26” barrel is very looooong in a box blind

The Weatherby Vanguard is a well respected bolt action gun and is made by Howa.

Get the son to handle multiple rifles and see what feels good in his hands.

-If you've got heart set on the Remington that's one thing, but if not, there are a lot of fine guns to consider in that price range. Some that come to mind include bolt actions made by Ruger, Savage, Mossberg, Howa, Weatherby (Vanguard) and possibly Browning.
-308 Win is a fine choice for a starter deer rifle, especially for the non-handloader. If your son's sensitive to recoil, look for reduced recoil ammo. When my son started deer hunting at 10 y/o, I bought him a Savage bolt action in 308 Win. If you come across a great deal, the 7-08 would be my #2 choice. OTOH, the 7-08 has some ammo availability disadvantages.
-I've never had a deer hunting rifle w/ a bull barrel. For typical deer hunting, it has no advantages but does add weight.

Keep us updated.

I bought a Savage Axis in 308. It’s a cheaper rifle..Bought it before deer hunting here in Sc and killed two deer with it.. a doe and a six point. Shot the buck from about 50 yards. So it’s accurate from there.. would like to upgrade after a few years though so good info on here

The stock was cheap hardwood and the magazine was cheap sheet metal and stuck out the bottom of the stock, but I've never known anyone who owned a 788 that didn't like it and who sold it. They were good guns.

I love my 700. Make sure the trigger was re-man'd from factory beforehand because the triggers had a problem with the rifle unintentionally firing. The dates of manufacture of the XMP triggers are May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014. If the rifle was taken in from the recall, it will be stamped on the baseplate I believe.
