One man dead, woman missing after boat capsizes on Pearl River

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Search and rescue crews are looking for a missing Folsom woman after a boating accident on the Pearl River Saturday.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says around 5:30 p.m. they received a call about a boat that capsized on the Pearl River near lock number 3.
The boat included the operator, 41-year-old Terry O'Keefe Jr., 31-year-old Jonie Morgan and her three children.
Officials believe the boat capsized when the boat went over the lock after O'Keefe was unable to start the boat. A 16-year-old happened on the scene and spotted the mother and her 8-year-old and 6-year-old sons in the water. On his way to help, his boat also capsized sending him into the water also. He was able to grab onto the mother and two boys but the mother slipped under the water and never resurfaced. All three boys were rescued by a nearby fisherman.
Shortly after arriving at the scene, officials retrieved the 4-year-old girl after she popped up from under the boat. She had been stuck under the boat for about 30 minutes but was still able to breathe.
The body of O'Keefe was recovered by search and rescue crews at 8 a.m. this morning. They are still searching for Morgan.
Investigators say all of the children were found wearing life jackets. They believe that both O'Keefe and Morgan were not wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.

Pretty sad reading that earlier. Was thinking about what you do in that situation? Try like hell to hit the wier head on and hope you high-point on it? Maybe you slide over and come out ok?
Gotta believe they got on that thing sideways and capsized.

I'm trying to figure something out... I know these locks well. My dad would bring us out there all the time when I was a kid. The locks have gated walkways over them and they stick up above the water level by at least 6ft on the upstream side where the water level is higher.
So this article is not making sense to me... There are a few waterfalls on the navigation canal. Maybe that what there referencing?
In any case, sad story.

Story is a little off. It happened at the bogue chitto river sill on the pearl river navigation canal. Terrible thing to see. Most of the accidents there are from people trying to drive over it and that is just not very smart.

That's one of the places I was thinking... Depending on current water levels there's anywhere from a 2 - 5ft drop there.

I wear one of the ones that inflate when they submerge.
One of my biggest fears is being knocked out and sent overboard.

That's exactly where it happened. The drop is only about 1 foot right now and that's when it's the most dangerous. During normal water levels it's about 4 feet drop but the water is only about hip deep.

Terrible ordeal and i feel for everyone involved. Am i reading this correctly that there was 5 people in a 14' boat? that seems like a lot of bodies in that small of a boat.
Ive slid down that damn for fun and you can feel the force pulling you under, i can only imagine that they got to close and capsized?

Just saw a post about it on Facebook. Here's the boy who saved the children.

Sounds like the young boy is a hero.
i hope he doesn't blame himself for the mother slipping away. I know it will probably be something he never forgets.

Don't know the rescue guy, but saw this earlier on FB. He lost his shotgun when his boat capsized and there is a gofund me setup. First gofund me that I approve of.

If the boat wouldn't start and they drifted over the edge, you'd think the adults would have had time to put on life jackets or drop an anchor or something.
Horrible how a simple day on the water can go so bad so quick.

I know the kid through bass tournaments out there. Don't know him personally, but younger friends that know him well always talk about him being a nice kid. Kudos to him for not only being at the right place at the right time, but doing something when it was needed.
I have to think the people fishing weren't familiar with the sill. At its height right now, there's really no reason to get that close to it without planning to jump it.
