Reduced Recoil Question
Posted on 1/24/14 at 11:01 am

Debating between a 308 and 7mm-08 and looking for recoil comparisons between the two as well as how each will compare to a standard 243 recoil???

7mm-08 will have less recoil than a 308. I believe it will have more than a 243 though.

i expected the 7mm-08 to have a little less than 308 but was curious to specific ppounds. From what I understand both are equal or less than 243 standard load.

I had actually settled on 7mm-08 but it appearsa that 308 ammo is much more abundant. ???-

The recoil will go
.308
.243/7 mm
As to your question about ammo that is the issue with 7mm compared to a .243/.308
ETA: I will say the 7 mm 08 is a very underrated deer rifle

The 7mm-08' had a mild recoil that is a little bit more than a .243 Win. and less than most loads in a .308 Win.
A common bullet load in the 7-08 is 140g while the 243 it is around 100g.

From Chuckhawks...
Caliber Recoil Energy
7mm-08 120gr 12.1 lbs
.308 150gr 15.8 lbs
it will change with Rifle weight and bullet weight

ive had a tough time finding a box or reduced recoil 7-08

I honestly can't even tell the difference, although the 7mm/08 should theoretically be softer.

i began looking for ammo after settling on a Savage 11 youth 7mm-08, and the reduced recoil loads are scarce.
anyone have any experiences finding ammo for 7-08 using reduced recoil ???

i expected there would be very little difference, but did not know the exact pounds of each which is why I asked.
I am beginning to lean 308 over 7mm-08 simply because of the ammo issue I have seemingly encountered in 7mm-08.

Just get a heavier gun.
Really you only notice recoil when you're practicing or sighting in your scope
Never noticed recoil when shooting at a deer

W/o looking up the specific info, you're pretty much right, although the differnces are small. Of course, it changes w/ full power loads. The factors included in the forumula to calculate recoil are amount of powder, bullet wt and gun wt. As the first two go up, so does recoil; as the latter goes up, recoil goes down.
243 Win full power recoil > 7-08 Rem reduced recoil load > 308 Win reduced recoil load.
308 Win full power load recoil > 7-08 Rem full power load recoil > 243 Win full power load recoil.
As far as ammo availability, I always heard how prevalent 7-08 ammo was, but didn't look until this year. I realize things were screwy this year. Nevertheless, at my small town WM, there was very little 243 (only one load sold, Federal Fusion), ZERO 7-08 of any kind (not even a label on the shelf for it) and a fair amount of 308 Win, full power only. You'll have to order the managed recoil loads. I can't speak to the availability of the reduced recoil loads from online sources.

thanks for the insightful reply. I actually found a box of 7-08 managed recoil at a local store. Scooped it up since my wife has a 7-08 that she never uses. I am still debating 7-08/308 purchase, figure if I go with the 308, I can still start the boys out on her 7-08, so wouldnt hurt to have a few boxes anyway.

To put in perspective one of the golden rules of physics:
"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."
So using this, if the bullet is heavier (using the same powder charge) it is more likely to recoil more.
All of those rounds share the same parent case (308 win). Where they differ is bullet size.
243 Win = 6mm
260 Rem = 6.5mm
7mm-08 = 7mm
308 = 7.62mm

You really can't go wrong either way. When I bought my 11 y/o son his first deer rifle, my two finalists were the 7-08 and 308. I went w/ the latter because I already had bullets, powder and dies to handload the 308, but not the 7-08. This was before the days of factory reduced recoil loads so I planned on working up my own. Reduced recoil loads can be VERY deadly and are appropriate for 90% of the distances at which most deer are killed. I got my first 7-08 this summer, a Remington XP-100. Managed to kill one deer w/ it. It's a NICE shooting deer round.

I don't think so. I don't think I've ever heard anybody say it was not a fantastic deer caliber.

If I lost my 270, I would replace it with a 7-08 or 260.
7-08 is lower recoil than 308, but higher recoil than 243. It is just as effective as 308, and will have fewer "shot selection issues" as 243.
