Anyone know where I can by filets wholesale at a decent price? Anywhere in between morgan city and chalmette?

Pretty sure redfish being classified as a game fish makes them illegal to sell. Black drum are a whole different story, but I've never seen them for sale either.

I purchsed redfish in Chalmette last week at a seafood outlet. $10/pound was just too much though

The closest you can get is Tilapia. You can pick your fish out of the tank at the Hong Kong market in Gretna.

Are you sure it wasn't Red Snapper.

I just did a little digging. Any redfish you buy has to be imported and was probably farmed, which is why it costs an arm and a leg. You may have better luck at a bigger store, doubt the mom and pop places along the hwy are gonna go through the hassle.

Most reddfish you buy here will be farm raised from Texas. There is also a small amount of Missisippi and Carolina wild reddish that can be sold here. Best bet for descent prices on redfish or drum fillets for descent prices will be at:
New Orleans Fish House
restaurant depot
INLAND seafood
Louisiana seafood exchange
All in New Orleans. They probably won't sell you less than a few pounds of fillets though. Not really retail places.

I know for a fact I've seen redfish and black drum for sale at whole foods. It's hit or miss though

If you've ever seen "redfish" on a menu in houston or the like it is black drum. Buddy of mine from hackberry fishes for a large seafood dealer in Houston. I was surprised when he told me that.

This isn't necessarily true. It's illegal for a restaurant to do this. I'm sure some still do it though. Also, there are a lot of farmed redfish around the palacios, tx area and some other coastal areas in Texas.

There's a new seafood store in Morgan City on Brashear Ave just over the bridge from berwick on the right. They may have some. Can't recall the name of the store. Sorry.

The larger Rouse's sell them. But they don't keep tons of it on hand. And you are going to pay more than you want. I believe most of their fish is farm raised.

I would check at the Seafood Flea market in Westwego...

This is true about 95% of the time, black drum is way cheaper than redfish and most people never know the difference and in fact would say that the drum tastes better. I worked in many different fine dining restaurants in the Baton Rouge area throughout college and every one of them served black drum and called it redfish.

I worked in the wholesale distribution and processing business for 20 years. A lot of restaurants buy redfish and sell it on the menu. Since redfish is farmed, it is available consistently throughout the year where as black drum can get hard to get during some months of the year.
I used to see (when it was unloaded where I worked) about 1/2-1 truckload of the farmed whole redfish coming into the Baton Rouge and New Orleans markets every week.

Some may do this but it is shady and illegal. I think is done less now than 10+ years ago.

Met a bunch of guys over in vermillion bay who specifically fish commercially for black drum with long lines.
