Recommendations for a miter saw?

I need one for basic projects. I would prefer a sliding one.

I would prefer a sliding one.
Ryobi would be the only one that is decent and compound with the slider. All the rest of them get pretty pricey.

If you getting a slider get a Hitachi. They don't stick out as far in the back. Go to Big Sky Tool. The C12RSH is a good one and will be my next, it's $335. Right now I'm using a Rigid 12" that I got off of Craiglist and I can't kill it.
Dint fall for the dual compound miter. I've had mine 4 years and I've never used that. I've even done some crown moulding, I find it easier to cut it then cut the back off with a coping saw for crown moulding.

I bought one of the el cheapos from harbor freight about 5 years ago and have been more than pleased with it. Built three decks and about a 75ft stairway on the lake with it.

you looking to spend 250-300 or 5-600?

I'd prefer to keep it under $300. I dont need a top-of-the-line saw.Just something that can handle casual use and last a while

You do get what you pay for, as far as being able to get more precise angles, etc.., but if thats your budget I would look at Hitachi, Craftsman, Rigid.
Whats the need for a slider? do you plan on cutting some wide boards

i have used a Dewalt DW713 10" single bevel miter saw regularly and been very pleased. I am no carpenter and use it only for weekend projects. Saw can do way more then I need to do.

12" non slider will cut that. Just need to flip it over.
I can cut a 2x10 completely across if I just pick up the front of the board a few inches off the base.
Someone mentioned the Harbor Freight model. It actually get pretty good reviews.
Don't go cheap on a blade either. You better off getting a little lesser saw with a better blade.

10-12" boards with mitered cuts?
You can either flip the board or use a circular most of the time for 10's and 12's
I had a dual bevel hitachi that I started with, but the precision was lacking. I have a Bosch now and its night and day better.

Yeah I guess I dont need a slider, but it would be nice to have if I could fit it in my budget

Wait for the Harbor freight ones to go on sale. I got the 12" compound sliding one for like 100$. Bought a very expensive blade and it cuts like butter. Motor might not have to torque the expensive ones have, but it isnt a competition for speed cutting.

Same here. It was about $100 or so I think. Has done everything I've needed.

I have built a house full of furniture with the 12" slider from Harbor Freight. If it ever gives out on me I will be buying an identical replacement.

If you just want a sliding to cut wider stock and you don't need it to cut 4x4's Lowes sells a 7-1/4" sliding saw that is a lot of saw for the money under their Kobalt house brand. About $130. My recently retired dad was a contractor and owns a wide gammut of different miter saws from cheap $99 10" basic models to big expensive 12" sliding yellow ones. He bought one on a whim and gave it a glowing review. Something like the 7-1/4" sliding is great because it's a lot smaller and lighter than a traditional 10" sliding saw which makes it easier to take to job sites and to store. Those big 10 and 12" sliding saws can take up quite a bit of space and are heavy enough you really just want to set them up on a work bench and not have to ever move it around. But if you need to cross cut a 12" board a sliding 10" is what you need.
