Yeah, a highly fit 1911 is NOT the most reliable weapon...period. If you ever happen to look at the original dimensional drawing for the 1911 you'll find it was never meant to be held to the tolerances custom 1911 shops build them to. I seriously doubt you can objectively show how those Rugers would be less reliable at any round count compared to your Wesson. My Springer 1911 has proven every bit as reliable as my nearly 20 year old USP .45 but I have know the USP will run in severe conditions and live on a diet of +p ammo that the 1911 won't.

My personal experience says otherwise. And I am familiar with 1911 tolerances.

EDIT - meaning that I understand a "loose" 1911, or one with a "rattle" will be less finicky and run better than a hand fit/custom one.

You're one data point vs hundreds or thousands that say otherwise. There's no reasonable argument to suggest buying a closer fit 1911 is going to result in increased reliability. None. The AR vs AK platform argument for reliability comes down to one having closer tolerances than the other and it applies with 1911's.

Man, this thread got derailed a long time ago.

Anyway, for the OP, the only 1911s I have had a chance to review and shoot at length are:

S&W 1911 Tactical (railed) - My personal gun
S&W 1911 Scandium
Springfield Loaded Champion (commander size)
Ruger SR1911 Commander

Of these, I think the Ruger is easily the best value. But if your budget is $1500 you can really up the customization.

Tiddle's Dan Wesson is on my list to review at a later date. From what he has told me, it seems to be absolutely flawless.

I also am a big fan of higher-level Springfield 1911s. The TRP that is suggested is a very well-fitted 1911. I also have a friend with a Springfield Lightweight Operator that is very well built. Springfield also does a great job on their finishes. They are always smooth and durable.

I didn't like the Springfield I personally tested because it had a bushingless barrel and that's a big turnoff for me. The upside of it is that the barrel can be built thicker to handle higher pressure ammo. The huge downside is that takedown relies on your possession of a tool to capture the recoil spring. That's not something I'm willing to put up with but your mileage may vary. Luckily most Springers have barrels with bushings in true 1911 fashion.

The Ruger is the best value of what I've seen for sure. And besides some play in the trigger (vertically and horizontally) it easily has the cleanest break and reset of any 1911 I've fired. It is unbelievably smooth. I also love the sharp sight picture from the tall Novak sights (which is offered on other 1911s too). If you want a basic but beautiful 1911, you could spring for this one.

Now for the S&W 1911s. Some people are turned off by the external extractor but I have not had a single ejection issue with mine or the Scandium one I tested. As long as it works, why is there an issue? 1911 purists don't like them all that much but I love mine. My full size was initially picky about magazines (preferring Wilson and Checkmate mags) but has been thoroughly broken in and runs all mags just fine now. The Scadium one I tested ran everything I threw at it. Know that the frame on this one is lightweight and the gun is intended for carry.

You could also look into some of the more affordable custom or semi custom builders. As others have suggested, Les Baer, Dan Wesson, and maybe a very low end Wilson or Blackhawk could be in your range. But then again, you may be better off with a more affordable (but still high quality) choice.

Most of all, if you're using this 1911 of choice for home defense, I would highly suggest you get some quality 10 round magazines made by Wilson or Chip McCormick.

For more information for the ones I've personally tested, here are the ones I've looked at. I will do more in the future when I get a chance though.

Ruger SR1911CMD - Affordable 1911 Horsepower
S&W1911SC - American 1911 on a Diet
Springfield Loaded Champion - Good 1911 Option

That's not what your words implied when you mentioned having thirty four rounds at your disposal and two guns instead of one, genius. Tell me how you have 34 rounds and 2 guns instead of one at your disposal if they're in separate locations? What if an intruder happens to be in the location of one of your firearms?

Why don't you make sure you understand your own freaking posts and what they say before being a smartass.

Just because you own a 1911 does not make you an expert, all I read about here is how they fail, but no mention of cleaning the firearm, the ammo or load, magazine combos, and what the failure was, until this is talked about in detail its impossible to comment to the reliability of any firearm.

Op go buy the Ruger, a big box of ammo and a ccw course

I understand my words well. I forget I have to explain semantics for those looking for alternative arguments. My Springfield I think holds close to 20 in and of itself.

My home I keep a pistol in master bedroom

My kids rooms are on other side of house, own wing

I alway pondered if I'm in middle and someone breaking in, do u run for gun or run to kids sleeping in their room so I have a pistol hidden on there side of house too.

2 guns can often be better than 1

Holy shite this has become a pissing match. To the poster who said I was going to keep it in the closet... Not happening. I've probably shot more hand guns and long guns than most that claim to be experts on this board. The gun will be used which is why I'd love to get as much satisfaction out of it as possible. The problem with most of my experience again is that it is "old" in terms of what's out now. Many companies who make 1911s now had no intention of making them the last time I was an active shooter. This will be the first of several hand guns that I plan on getting in the next year or 2. I've had revolvers and semi autos before I just got rid of them like an idiot.
Now I can afford basically what I want and I want to spend a little coin on it...
I thought about the les Baer or trying to find maybe a Wilson, but I don't think I'll shoot it enough to justify spending another $5-700 on it. I can buy mags, bullets and a holster for less than that.
I like the trp, the kimbers have always felt good(a lil wary of them), the smiths (KR) I have no experience with at all.... I'll stay away from the Ruger though just want something a little nicer. No problems with them, they work and there is no doubt in that.

I'm no 1911 expert, but I think the Dan Wesson's are the best-looking. Just my 2 cents.

What are you using it for? House gun? Carry? I love the P30. P2000 is a great carry gun

They just released a striker fired pistol called the VP9 to compete with Glocks and XDs. Supposedly has best stock trigger on the market. Haven't played with one yet. Trying to get my boss to order some

Anytime a company uses "perfection" they are usually too cocky to see that some competition may be better.

I held the Sig P320 the other day in your store. It's a decent piece but something about that back just bothers me. They use the exact same slide from the 250/290 with a different internal mechanism. Just seems finicky and odd. And it has the usual tall slide like most Sigs. Not my cup of tea but may be a good brew for some others.
