This afternoon at about 520, I was in my backyard in Oak Ridge and heard the unmistakable call of a purple Martin in flight. Looked up and 5 scouts overhead. I brushed out and Sevin dusted my houses and commenced to raise them. Before I got the first house completely bolted up, three of the scouts were inside. Low tonight 39 degrees..so am glad that I was there to hear and respond. As the scouts soared around, having reached their destination in my back yard after a long flight from Central America, I marveled in the moment and realized that the scouts were probably born in the houses to which they had returned.

So....get your Purple Martin houses cleaned and raised to welcome your flock back!

How do you keep wasps and those big Mexican hornets from building nests in the Martin houses after the weather gets warm?

I don't have problems with such in my Martin houses, which are aluminum or plastic gourds. However, in the past have had problems with wasps in wooden bluebird houses, but learned that wasps can be deterred by rubbing ivory bar soap on the inner roof and walls of the house. Wasps won't enter and the bluebirds don't mind.

Man I've had my house up two weeks and haven't even heard a PM. Wish my colony would get here.

I'm 20 miles north of I 20, but there are some large, long-established colonies in my village and the surrounding area, so I guess more scouts may be headed this way, although it is probably a latitudinal function. Are you north or south of I 20?

Saw some in Avoyelles, but none in Rapides yet. Should be any day.

I think that their arrival is a week to 10 days earlier than last year. Last year, the scouts had some brutally cold days to endure. The forecast through the weekend isn't too bad.

Balls, I will cut off Balls Jr's trampoline privileges if he shows up with a Red Ryder. Anyway, you are going to have him too busy on a ball field for him to be concerned with our feathered friends. You ought to have you a couple of Martin houses on your place....ideal location to develop a colony.

You correct, I need to get some of them. May do that today actually. There was 1 up when I bought the place but it came down due to an errant maneuver with my zero turn way back when.
