I have never hunted during primitive weapon season. If I read the rules correctly you are allowed to use a shot gun that single shot and has an exposed hammer. If this is the case what is the effective range of say a 20 or 12 gauge with buckshot?

You'll likely get different answers, but in my experience I'd say:

12 gauge slug - 75 yards

12 gauge 00 buck - 50 yards

Now you can certainly shoot at longer distances, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Thought about this. But I have 4 old single shot 20' and 12's in the gun gun cabinet. Thought it might be fun to try that out.

If I went the 35 whelen route, what's the best value, handi rifle?

CVA less recoil and much better trigger. I got rid of my handi-rifle when I shot the CVA.

I love that they use Bergara Barrels as well (at least on the Apex).

That's mine but .444, solid, accurate and plenty of power but surprisingly soft recoil, more of a push recoil than a punch if that makes sense.

She a sweet shooting rifle. Im shooting 180gr Barnes VOR-TX at 200 yards @ +2" to center. I site her at 100 yards dead center.

I have had both the Handi Rifle and CVA Elite Stalker in 35 Whelen. I much prefer the CVA by a very large margin. The stock design shoves the recoil away from your face making it much more comfortable to shoot and was more accurate than my Handi Rifle. The Handi Rifle kicked like a mule.

With regards to laws in La governing primitive weapons, while this is not verbatum, it must be a single shot, exposed hammer, 35 caliber or greater.

I may be mistaken, but I thought mississippi was doing away with the primitive weapon season this year. Allow the use of a rifle that week also
