I'll go through the M12 list:

bandsaw
regular drill
hammer drill
right angle drill
PEX tool(not like you'd need that)
jackets/sweatshirts/handwarmers
1/4 and 3/8 impact wrenches
impact drivers
1/4 and 3/8 ratchet
palm nailer
dremel tool
copper snips
radio
multiple lights
rotary hammer drills
one of those multi-tools that cuts grout and under door trim
sawzall
jigsaw
random tubing snips

Most of those I would just buy the corded version. The M12 is supposedly the best around the home drills (small tasks).

I used to run a fence company in college. I bought several brands over the course of a few years - rigid, porter cable, mikita, etc. I now only have dewalt. Nothing but yellow and have renovated multiple houses with my dewalts tools.

However, I heard Home Depot bought dewalt. Don't know about the newer stuff.

Don't think so. Lowes still has DeWalt. Black and Decker bought them out a long time ago.

For light to moderate home use I bought a Rigid set. And have been very pleased so far. Made in the USA and a lifetime warranty on the tools as well as the batteries.
THis. I bought the Rigid Multi Tool and that thing is awesome. It drills as good as a corded ryobi, and then with the driver, sander, wood saw, and metal saw capabilities, its pretty handy.

Battery life is good and re-charges fast. And, the best thing, aside from the light in the handle, is the fact that the battery dies suddenly. It is full power, then its done. Not this gradual weakening Black and Decker crap.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the major brands. Heck, I had a cheap $20 cordless from Harbor Freight last me 2 years.

Here is my impact in my hand. The drill and driver are both smaller.

I dislike tools that just kill all of a sudden. Mine dies, and then gives you a little more juice to finish up before you charge. Say you are screwing in a 6" long lag bolt and only get half way done before the thing dies. With mine you get a little extra to finish up, while others you are just up shite's creek

We've got about 6 dewalt impacts we use every day at work and they are work horses. We torque the shite out of the equipment we work on and it's never lacking of power with the 18v. That being said, my brother in law works for a big mechanical contractor in MS and they use Makita and says nothing can compare.

DeWalt 20V Max. I picked up the premium 5-piece combo kit with 3Ah batteries for $300. Now they have 1.5 - 4 Ah battery options. Be more than plenty for any DIY job. I used the 1/4" impact to remove the rear end cover bolts on my truck and it breezed through.

We have Dewalt here at work and they are nice, but I also have friends that use Porter Cable, and Mikita.

I have a Porter Cable circular saw (plug in style), a Rigid drill (battery powered), and Kobalt mitre saw. So I have a variety of brands but they are all good tools and I haven't had any problems with them. The Rigid drill is small and has a lifetime warranty on the batteries.

I do construction/carpentry/metal working in the Coast Guard for a living and I really like Ridgid's line of tools. They got the best batteries and chargers in my opinion. You should check out the Ridgid Multimaster set, if you are looking at a set of tools.

Seems like top brands are Dewalt, Mikita, Rigid, Milwakee, and Porter Cable. I have a Porter Cable dual-action polisher that I use on cars and my friend who has detailed professionally for 7 years uses his almost daily. It still hasn't stopped running. It's funny you mention that brand because it didn't even slip my mind.

I guess I just need to go to Lowe's or HD and see which ones have the best features.

Thanks again guys.

Like I said. The Home Depot in Denham Springs had a sale with the Dewalt set that you also get a free 129 dollar bare tool. This is probably going on in all the stores.

Milwaukee all day, every day

After Katrina hit and screwed up all my tools, I bought a Milwaukee tool set. It's still going strong. Came with 3 batteries, two are still going strong. Renovated one and 1/2 houses with them.

ETA: avoid Ryobi.

I build cell phone towers for a living. We have always used Dewalt battery equipment and Milwaukee corded equipment. I have seed a Dewalt impact driver dropped from 150'. I walked over and dug it out of the dirt and pulled the trigger, worked perfect. I have the 20v lithium set. And bouggt an additional charger, 2 batteeies and a drill witg a hammer drill setting. IMHO regarding battery powered tools the conversation of choice should only be between a Dewalt 18V XRP kit or a 20V Lithium Ion kit.

I second the Milwaukee recommendation...

I would also consider Bosch...

Eta......do not buy Ryobi.......that shite is garbage.

I wouldn't buy them...but in their defense...My father in laws house went under in Katrina his ryobis were buried in 12" of salt water silt inside his home for about a week...he cleaned them up about a month later and they still work to this day...only thing he's had to replace recently were batteries...

I'll go through the M12 list:

My M12 drill lasted 10+ years...and the only thing really wrong with it is the trigger switch or reverse forward neutral sitch...

I went with the 12v originally so if I got caught in a bind I could hot wire it to a car or deep cycle battery...and I used it that way many times...made an adapter out of an old worn out battery pack...

I now have the 18v lithium series though and love it...
