Got to my mil house last night and she informed me that her pool hasnt kicked on since a really bad storm about 3 days ago. I have some experience replacing pump motors, impellers, etc. She has a 2 motor set up, no heater. Everything looked fine outside so i figured lightning might have tripped breaker. Sure enough the breaker was tripped so i reset it and went outside to kick the system on. As soon as i flipped the switch i heard a loud pop and sparks shot out from under the booster pump. Breaker tripped again so i made sure i shut everything off. I have no problem replacing the booster pump or the other pump if they r fried but would all the wiring need to be replaced as well if lightning hit it? Or does it sound like just a short? I know its not much info but she is a widow and we live 4 hrs away and when we do come in i try to help her as much as possible. Thanks.

Sounds like an internal motor problem, maybe fried lead.

Probably be ok just changing booster pump. If the wires or breaker look really burnt then you may have to do some electrical work too.

Does the booster pump run the in pool cleaner/vacuum?

Can you run the filter pump without the booster? My pool has separate timers for each pump so I can run filter pump without running booster pump.

If you can, at least keep the pool water recirculating, filtered, and being chlorinated. It's easier to skim out a few leaves than clean up green water!

This. And in all likelihood, you won't have to do any electrical work. They symptoms indicate a simple motor replacement.

former pool owner reporting (i filled it in after 10 yrs):
if possible keep main pump running bc of reason stated above
if u are in BR i have a used 1.5 hp main pump and motor and 1 hp booster pump and motor. you can have them for $50 each.
wiring should be fine otherwise there would be other probs in the house itself.

Am in Shreveport. Thanks for the advice guys. Bought a replacement. Wiring was easy. Plumbing was a pain. Took about 2hrs, wt trip to lowes, and fired right up. Earned mucho points on this one. Thanks again.
