Learn how it looks. I am very allergic but only had it once in about 10 years cause I know its going to be on ground in the woods and up nearly every tree.

Its variable in leaf shape and also can look like a branch of a tree when it gets really large.

The sap can stay on clothes up to a year and still infect you.

While I wouldn't use it on my face or junk, I learned long ago that bleach works the best. Scrub with soap until the blisters break, pour bleach on it. Dries it out in no time.

Learned it 20 years ago from a park ranger and have been doing it ever since.

I heard that spraying with brake cleaner will get rid of it.

I tried it last time I got it. I do not recommend.

Bleach does work but it also burns like fire, so if you try it be prepared for that. I've gotten it my whole life. Only once was it bad enough to not be knocked out by bleach. There's a product called Ivarest that works really well for anti-itch and drying it up too. I haven't bought it in awhile but I think you can get it at CVS.

Everytime you get out the woods use zanfels on any exposed skin as soon as you can after exposure. I am highly allergic and this keeps my poison ivy to only once a year.

Currently taking a Z-pack to remove thy itch

Z-pack is antibiotics, you need steroids. A 5-day Medrol dose pack can help, as someone mentioned above, but for bad poison ivy most need a longer course of steroids - up to two weeks and then slowly wean off. With my last attack I took steroids for 5 days and was better, then it rebounded just as bad when I stopped. Had to get back on steroids for full two weeks.

I have similar stories as other posters. Never got it as a kid. Got it awful a month ago. Scalding hot water to burn that shite was the cure that worked for me.

Had to go back and look at the pack. That is what I was taking. Thanks.

Damn, I got it last week, second time in my life, first time was over 20 years ago. I figured I became immune to it.

Yep - to bleach.

Have always gotten the stuff and for over a decade and half was a 120+ day a year rock climbing whitewater paddler....meaning I got several cases from sprint to fall. At first notice or known exposure wash twice with Dawn Liquid. And then a good bleach/washcloth scrubbing about three times over next 2 days seemed to do wonders. Caution: some people do not tolerate bleach well - if so flush w/plenty of water afterwards... however I usually choose to let the bleach remain on for a while.

Was coming to post this. I use a dry washcloth to scrub the hell out of it until the blisters rupture then pour chlorox on it. Burns like F'ing fire, but after a few seconds of burn the itch and blisters are gone forever.

Plantain is one of the best kept secrets out there for curing poison ivy, insect bites, etc. It grows wild and it WORKS. Big Pharma won't admit it nor advertise this fact, however. What do you think native Americans and settlers used for poison ivy? A plantain poultice works. I've used it, fixed it for my neighbors and friends. And it's free. Here's the link: LINK
