Pistol or Primitive Weapon?

Looking to purchase a pistol or a 35 Whelen this weekend, but I cannot decide which one I want more. The guns I currently own are a 30-06 and a 12 gauge, so either one will be new to me.

The pistol would be a CZ 75b, used for personal protection. (Home defense, and hog defense during bow-season).
LINK /

The 35 Whelen will be a CVA Scout w/ a nice scope, used for primitive weapon season.
LINK

Both will be right around the same price range, and I can only get one or the other. WWTOBD?

TIA

Protect home with shotgun and buy the primitive gun to extend your deer season.

Just gave my shotgun to my parents because they have had quite a few break-ins in their area lately.

Where do you hunt? There is talk of primitive weapons season being done away with in Miss next year

Hunt in Louisiana mostly, and Mississippi occasionally.

It would be the pistol for me. I like shooting and a .35 whelen is not something you want to shoot much.

Isn't it illegal to carry anything larger than a .22? And of course this bring up the fact that people believe they need a pistol for hog defense.

Buy this, though I wouldn't waste too much money on a scope. You will hunt with this only a couple of times a year and usually at close range.

Get the Whelen. I have the same gun with 3x9 Nikon scope. It's a great gun, doesn't kick much more than a 30-06(I have one of those too)and more ammo is avail. in 185 grn.. However if you need to protect your family and belongings then only you can make that call.

Thanks for the great responses guys.

I guess I'll have to rephrase "hog defense" to "hog offense."

I came face to face with a 300 lb boar last bow-season while I was tracking a deer. After standing 10 yards away from an animal of that stature without a weapon, I vowed never to let it happen again.

last bow-season

As stated earlier only a 22 pistol with rat shot is legal for carry during archery only season.

ETA: IMO 35 whelen

I always carry a pistol for the risk of this potentially happening. That must've been scary as shite!

If you want it for both home defense and possibly for the woods, I would look more at a 357 magnum or a 44 magnum. A 9mm is good if you can actually hit them in the head whereas a 357 or higher has a better chance of putting one on its arse.

I thought if you're only hunting on a WMA you could only carry a .22?

You can Concealed Carry in Louisiana state parks, Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), and wildlife refuges.

When did they add single shot shotguns to Primitive Weapon?

quote:

Single shot, breech loading shotguns, 10 guage or smaller, having an exposed hammer, loaded with buckshot
or rifled slug.,

The learning curve on the pistol is gonna be a whole lot steeper than the one on the Whelen (unless you're in the 2% that are born with intuitive handgun skills).
