Got an aunt and uncle that live in Old Metairie, they had one - took a young bumpkin such as myself a while to figure out what it was for.

Cool little snakes. I understand the retroactive, "oh shite, she picked up a venomous snake" reaction. But, some pain and swelling is about all you'll get from a pygmy long as you go directly to the hospital. That's assuming it actually WAS a pygmy rattler and not a Dekay's Brown snake which half the south thinks are "ground rattlers".

But, anyway, this just emphasizes why everyone should be able to identify AT LEAST the venomous snakes in their area. If you know which snakes can hurt you, and don't go putting your hands and feet where you can't see, you're in almost no danger of ever being bitten.

I know you guys love pointing this out, but just because the old women in Ruston can't tell a pygmy from a dekay's doesn't mean it's a universal phenomenon.

No one said universal. Highly likely though. People suck at identify animals and plants. It's as if people want the snakes they see to be venomous.

I know, but OP posted a pic of a pygmy and said multiple people handled it close up, so I think he gets the benefit of the doubt on this one. Most dekay's/ground rattler mix-ups occur at shovel's length away. Almost everyone I've ever shown a dekay's is able recognize it's not a rattlesnake once they get a closer look at the non-smashed version.

He's not on my benefit of the doubt list for snakes-just car buying, outdoor kitchens and whiskey.

A snake thread without Moto911 really isn't a snake thread at all.

Say what now? What's the point of the tweezers if you're getting that close?

The universal phenomenon is people not identifying a snake, then assuming it was poisonous. Really unlikely that:
1. Snake was poisonous
2. Novice handles snake without being bitten.
3. Non-biting house snake is a Pygmy rattler.

Thus, logic gets you to DeKays, which are pretty common, small,
patterned snakes you find in your yard.

I give no fricks about who's panties are the most bunched. Obviously I like snakes, I'm the god damned AthensRattler.

I'd like to point out that the OP posting a picture of a pigmy from the internet doesn't make his snake from 20years ago a pigmy. Sure they are in LA and not even that hard to find there but I bet it was a dekay or neonate rat snake in his house that day. Based on habitat preference, locomotion, etc pigmies are among the least likely snakes to get inside a house. That said, it is possible.

The pigmy in the photo was from the Savannah River Site in SC and JD Wilson took the photo. Here it is on the back of my autographed copy of Whit Gibbons' Snakes of the Southeast. Maybe some of y'all should pick up a copy so you won't keep asking for IDs of rat snakes and racers.
