There seems to be an gap in the engine lineup of these manufacturers. Why not offer a smaller diesel engine in the neighborhood of 500 lb ft of torque for those that want a deisel alternative to the gasoline options but don't need to regularly tow 10+ tons? Why not have two diesel engines to choose from instead of just one?

It probably has something to do with CAFE standards and emissions profiles.

Yes, the Ford F-250 did come out on top during our 16-event empirical portion, but fell a healthy distance short of the competition (we can't help but wonder what would have happened with 4.30:1 gears) in ride quality and overall interior design and quality.

Grain of salt.

Think the age of the F series platform cost it...reviewers knocked the ride and interior in both comparisons.

Hmmm...

This surprises me a bit. Man, my truck is really quiet at highway speeds. I think it rides really well for being a 4X4 with FX4.

Summary "Ford won all of the objective tests, so we made them the loser of the subjective ones."

Should honestly be the preference now that diesels are becoming increasingly unreliable. Nothing wrong with a gas 3/4 ton.

They are all definately getting more complex and more costly.....but only some are becoming more unreliable.

I agree. A good, sturdy gasoline engine goes a long way for 90% of HD truck buyers.

I still wish that manufacturers would provide a smaller diesel with similar output to ther entry level V8 engines for their HD trucks. I think the first one that does will see a lot of interest.

Smaller diesels are out there. Ram has a 3.0L V6 in their half tons that appears to be very competitive. VW and GM both have diesel compact cars. GM is introducing the new 2.8L Duramax for their mid sized trucks (and possibly their half tons) next year. There's rumors about GM bringing the 4.5L design to production soon, and the Nissan Titan may be getting a Cummins product with a similar displacement pretty soon.

So the judges cared more about how the trucks performed at the Mall? These tests always turn up odd discrepancies. The F-250 destroyed the Ram on the 7.2 mile Eisenhower Pass yet the Ram had the best top speed with no explanation in the paragraphs on that part of the testing. Doesn't seem to jive with the 1/4-mile testing if you look at the trap speeds and the tow-haul mode should have been kept on for all passes loaded and unloaded.

Will probably be seen a lo more with the increased cost of Diesel engines, and the new exhaust urea crap.

The fuel economy is just so poor.

Maybe 15 on the highway...

In that challenges the diesels got 16 mpg empty and 7 towing. By the time you figure in the approximately 8 grand for a diesel, it would seem to me that it would take a long time to recoup in costs in has vs diesel, but I'm no expert.

I agree with you about the cost deal, but my truck gets an easy 18 on the highway empty. Towing depends on the weight. Even in town it gets pretty good.

That gas burner might get 15 on it's very best day and it's really gonna suffer in town.

No doubt, you can buy a lot of gas for $8K, but you'll be stopping. A lot.

You can also tune a diesel for a little better bump in MPG's than you can a gas mill. Advantages of not having a throttle body and a generally more precise fueling strategy. Those that lose the most are those that don't keep their diesel around long enough and keep trading up to the newest fancy model. I've seen plenty with 200,000+ miles on the bottom end that looked absolutely spotless.

I'm too scared to do anything until it's out of warranty.
